300bk HD ammo

I'm wanting to build a Ar pistol in 300bk. I think it would make a awesome HD gun with heavy subsonic ammo. What should I look for? Heavy solid lead? Open tip match ammo? What would you use in a pistol?

Personally I would stick to supersonic. Otherwise you've given up the primary advantages of using a rifle round. Higher velocities and improved terminal ballistics. .300BLK subs are essentially equivalent to .45acp in terms of energy and momentum. 200-220 grain bullets in the 1kfps range....

If you're going to go sun though the bullet above is probably the one.

If it were me and I was using .300 BLK for home defense it would be 110 grain Hornady VMax. I can attest personally to their rapid expansion and tissue destruction on deer without a through and through. I would expect them to likewise be quick fight stoppers at HD ranges.

Now if your plan for subs includes suppression and hearing concerns that changes the calculus a bit.

I just went through this about a month or so ago after building my HB clone. I found the same round recommended time and time again for .300BLK. This is what I've put in my HD mags.

I've hear lots of people using varmint rounds like Hornady V-max. Personally I would pick something that would expand and penetrate (that's what she said) like my favorite:

I'm also a fan of the VorTX. My only concern in a HD situation is how many walls those solid copper bullets will penetrate. I don't have any data to back it up but my guess is the VMax bullets would pose at least slightly less risk of over penetration in a home environment. Granted there are no guarantees there.

I can attest that the VorTX and VMax are both nasty on tissue.....
