The Knights Armament M110 is a semi-automatic rifle in service with U.S. military, used as a designated marksman rifle and replaced many M21 and Mk14 systems. The rifle was based on the SR25, which was in turn based on the old AR10 back in the 60's as a direct impingement 7.62x51 semi-automatic rifle. Ammunition used: Black Hills 175gr Match .308 win.

I wonder why the military went with a 1:11 twist rate and not the 1:10 that is usually chosen for those heavier grain match loads.

A 1:11.25 twist is fully adequate for the 175 SMK projectile. Even my old 1:12" barrel will stabilize them just fine. There are other factors in play. For instance, the barrels they use employ 5R rifling, which has different stabilization characteristics. 1:10" twist barrels are great for 175 SMK's, but the extra twist speed over the 1:11.25" barrels is to accommodate for 180gr -210gr projectiles you will find on the commercial market. The 1:11.25" 5R rifled barrels and 175 SMK's are a match made in heaven.

I carried an older SR25 in Haiti in 95'. SOCOM reclassified it as the Mk11 rifles and then Big Army adopted it to become the M110. Inspected and serviced this one last month. The 7.62mm guns will be withdrawn and rebarreled to 6.5mm CM later.

The new FN Scar 20S has a 1:12 twist which blows my mind

I have started working with the civilian equivalent to the M110-A1 SASS. So far seems to be pretty accurate and I plan on running it out to 1000.

HK has a good system. I love mine and need the extended rail like yours..lol

Are you running an adjustable gas block?

I'm not. Haven't had any failures with any of the ammo I've tried, but it's been fed all match ammo (168gr+). I'm currently running 175gr FGMM.

It looked like the rail had the adjustable gas block opening and I was just curious. I have had great luck with Hornady 155gr ELDs Match. It shoots better than me. I will have to try the 175gr FGMM

Yeah those blocks are extremely rare, but not necessary for what I use it for. I suppose extremely lightweight rounds may call for it, but I've experienced great accuracy with the heavier stuff.

It has all the G28 parts and a Geissele trigger.
