I normally load Nosler Custom Competition 168gr HPBT and I use them just for plinking are longer ranges when I can. I am running low and was thinking of other projectiles. My gun is a savage 10 heavy bull barrel 22 inch barrel. Lapua brass with 44.5gr of Varget. What do you guys run.

I haven’t begun loading match quality .308 yet, just some cheap 147, but through my research the 175gr match bullets like SMK and Nosler HPBT are both excellent shooters in savages. Mine is an 18” 5R model 10.

I was able to grab some Nosler 175’s on sale a little while ago and will play with both Tac and IMR4895.

If you want to stick with 168s and still shoot long range then try the 168 ELD-Ms. They have a great BC at .523, which is higher than the 175 SMK or Nosler 175 HPBT and much higher than the 168 Nosler you are shooting. They are very accurate too.

I was toying with the idea of maybe a different weight. But I know my gun likes the 168. Not tried anything heavier.

Nothing wrong with a 168 for long range if it's a good 168. The 168 SMK gave the 168 weights a bad name as it's horrible through transonic and hence all the memes about the .308 dropping out of the sky at 800 yards. The 168 ELDs won't do that. I have shot them in factory ammo to over a 1000 yards at matches and they work great. If you want to stay 168 then try them. If you wanted to go heavier then try the 178 ELD-M. They have a .547 BC and will do well also at long range.

Awesome thanks. I may pick up some 175’s and see how they do. I am wanting to take the long range course at bang steel and start shooting more with it.

Try them but try the 178 ELDs also of you are stepping to the 170ish weights. Again it has a much better BC at .547 than the 175 SMK at .496 or Nosler HPBT at .505 and when shooting long with the .308 you want a good BC. That's why i said to try the 168 ELDs as they are higher too at .523.
