308..? Why not..?

If you are paying that much for 6.5 ammo you are buying it in the wrong spot! LOL

OP nothing wrong with a .308. I have a few and compete with them in Tac class and just have fun shooting. For your wants and needs the .308 will do fine. Now is a good time to shoot a .308 too with the better bullets available with higher BCs. I also own a few couple 6.5s and 6mm Creeds too. All about options. Doesn't have to be one or the other. You can get a rifle and have multiple barrels for it too. .308 and 6.5 use everything the same except for the barrel.

I've never swapped barrels on a bolt gun. Gas guns of course. Is it something you can do easily to have a double caliber setup? Or is it too much work and worth just getting a second rifle?

Who ever said they were? It was someone here bringing it in as it's something new that the Creedmoor gets less barrel life than a .308. The Creedmoor came out in late 2007 and people knew it then. Not new info.

It all comes down to what you want or need in the cartridge. The 300WM gets less barrel life than the .308. Does it make the .308 better? Nope just different. For the OP the .308 would work out just fine. If down the road he wanted better ballistics he can just rebarrel to a Creedmoor.

I'm not arguing with you, you're exactly right. I was only pointing out that folks love to cling to the ballistic performance of the one, what they don't talk about is the inherent cost that can actually make the "inferior" round a better one to shoot if you don't mind learning.

Tikka required a relief cut to remove. They're TIGHT.

It depends on the rifle. Some like Savages and people who make a Remage can be done at home with a barrel vice and an action wrench and a set of go/no go gauges. It's not hard and a custom barrel is better than a factory barrel so there is that. Another option is when you do shoot out the barrel you can have a smith put two or three barrels on to the action and they are properly headspaced and shouldered so you just have to screw them on.

As for your rifle choices, the Bergara are good rifles. Tikka too. If you want a DBM make sure to get something that takes AICS style mags. Others are reliable but they can get expensive.

Bigfelipe, are you looking for a factory rifle or looking to build? Also what's your price range?

The Tikka will have proprietary mags. Typically $90-100. I just bought one from Beretta for $68 with a promotion code.
Tikka mags are double stack, so shorter for same capacity. The 5 round magazines are blocked 10 round bodies.

The AICS mags are the only reason I'm looking at other options than Tikka. I don't want to spend Tac A1 money though and then have to change the chassis.

It sucks because they all have pros and cons. Nothing out there is exactly what I want. But I don't want to put the time money and effort involved to build one at this point. Doesn't make sense right now.

Factory. I'm most likely going with a Tikka T3X TAC A1. Unless I find a really good reason to change my mind to one of the other options...

A relief cut? Into what? The receiver or the barrel?
Barrel. A Smith with better tools might be able to break it loose with more penetrating oil, time, heat and patience and then maybe you could swap back and forth at home, but everyone I know who's been down the barrel change road was doing it for replacement so a relief cut was expedient.

This is the deal that has me all wrapped around the axle about it, available in either 20" or 24", same price.

So you are looking to spend about $1800? Used market can get you a lot of rifle for the money too. Tons of good deals pop up over at Snipers Hide but that deal above at Euro Optics is a real good one too.

I'm looking at about $1k, but that euro deal comes with an $1800 rifle and an $800 scope for $1800. That puts the rifle in my price range new and it's a tough deal to pass on...

I'll post up when it comes in and I get it together...

Now to source some ammo and a scope base...

I am using a Warne 20 moa base/rings set up. As far as factory ammo. Hornady makes a good out of the box match grade ammo. My suggestion would be make it yourself

Make sure to get rings or mount in an AR height 1.4-1.5" height for that set up.

Try a few types of ammo but as mentioned the Hornady ELD line would be good factory match ammo with bullets with high BCs. I have used the 168 ELD factory match ammo in matches and it does great to 1000 and then some. The 178 ELDs so well also.

Do you handload?

How do u like the ruger scout?
The one I had I loved. Took a little to get use to the bolt, but after a few range trips I could throw it pretty well. It is just a rifle I am fast with and at 50-250yds I feel very comfortable and confident with it.

Only thing I will change now is not having a scout optic and just putting a traditional set of rings on it. I don't really want it for the scout scope it is the handy barrel length and a threaded barrel that make it desirable for me .

I read it needs a high mount. I just started a new thread on mounts... Hopefully the one @Matt.Cross has will get me started while I research.

I cast and reload in 9/10mm and 300blk, and have dies for 556 but have yet to roll a bullet. I'm not currently set up to actively load. Hopefully soon. I'll get .308 dies at some point and begin accruing components, but for now I'll shoot factory and surplus.

That mount should work fine. Had one in the past and they are good for the price and better for your price. LOL

I will say you might not want to shoot surplus through that rifle if you want good performance. Rarely do they work for precision long range. Yes they will go bang but can be frustrating. If you wanted something cheaper the Hornady American Gunner 155 isn't bad and you can keep the brass. Or as I said about the ELD-M loadings above for long range precision.

I wouldn't shoot surplus for performance, just for fun 100-300yd steel banging...

Only found a couple of places with ELDs in stock. Pricey... I ordered 5 boxes of various ammo from 110gr varmint to 180gr JSPs to see what it likes out of the box...

And a Magpul M-Lok bipod...

In his old age the great elephant killer Karamojo Bell was asked what he would take for elephants if he was going back to Africa....his answer??? "I'm interested in that new .308 round. I think it would be a fine elephant killer".

You’ll get tired of that bipod once you start shooting past 800. They’re too short to get enough elevation for those longer shots. Also if you decide you want an arca rail sawtooth rifles makes an mlok one for that rifle.

I'll figure it out... They're priced well and I won't be shooting for that far very often...

I started with a magpul on mine so it’ll work. Have you bought the rifle yet? Grab a gun had the best price with grab a quote when I bought mine in March. I paid $1510 iirc.

Are you hunting with the rifle? If not I would stick with match ammo with match bullets. They usually shoot better than hunting bullets.

And the Magpul bipod is not bad. It goes up pretty high. like 6.5-10.5". I use a Harris 6-9" and I am closer to 7" area when shooting. I don;t think you will have an issue with the magpul. I have a couple of them on my ARs and they are plenty high on them too.

I don't know yet. I would love to hunt with it but it's not a lightweight... I'm curious how the barrel likes different weight projectiles. I'll grab a brick of brass ball ammo too for plinking and brass collection. I'll get match ammo when I find a decent price. Privi Partisan has affordable match ammo I will likely try too... I'll play for a bit and then work towards reloading...
