Welp I just bought an Creality Ender 3 Pro, got it from Creality, was 50 cheaper than on Amazon. It'll take about 10 days to get vs having it Saturday, but it's fifty bucks.
I wish I would have jumped on some deals posted here on CFF, but I didnt, oh well. Now there is one heading my way (ships out Friday, according to Creality)

I'll be relying on folks like @DirtySCREW @Dstrbdmedic167 @Ikarus1 and @Jerzsubbie for some help in getting started.
I have ideas on some things I want to make, and then, as I look at Thingverse I see all these other neat things.
There will be gun stuff.
There will be stuff given away on here too.

Those who print - used the Amazon filament? Decent product?

Yes! Amazon basics filament is nice

DS
Im going to lean on yall, get used to it lol

Does filament come in different sizes, or will any filament 'fit' in the Ender3?

Watch Chep on YouTube... filament Friday..search those and you'll find him...he's my favorite 3d printer YouTuber

Also look at:

3d print nerd

Maker's muse

And
Naomi "sexycyborg" Wu when the Mrs or kids ain't around... hehe

I believe they are a "standard" size.
Prusa is making their own filament and us supposed to be king. However..I'm very satisfied with the Amazon filament

Congrats on the new toy!

I haven’t used Amazon Basics filament but did hear good things about it. My go-to filament was eSun PLA Pro because it was stronger, had better bed adhesion, wasn’t as brittle, and I felt was a little more forgiving if your settings weren’t perfect. It was like $2 more than regular PLA so it was well worth it for me.

Do you order from ebay or where?
Im going to try to have some filament ordered and here by the time it arrives so there isnt the additional holdup.

Between now and then Ive got to figure out a workbench/spot solution for the printer and stuff
Ive seen some cheap/DIY solutions, one involving 2 inexpensive Ikea tables stacked on each other.
Im looking at some solutions for an enclosure, from some LIGHT reading, keeping that heat in/at the unit is supposed to help, right?
SO IM looking at things to do so Im ready to go when it comes

What about hatchbox brand filament?

I can laser cut acrylic panels if you want to do something custom.

I think I’m in the market for a printer too. Not 100% sure yet. I’ve seen some cool lathe clamps and fixtures printed on them. Seems like something real handy to have in the shop!

Hatchbox is like Federal ammo. They’re probably the biggest name, it works well, you can trust it, and pretty much everyone has used it at some point even if they don’t use it today.

I usually ordered my filament on Amazon, but if ordering more than like 4-5 roles, ordering direct from the Mfg can sometimes be a better deal. Depending on Mfg they might offer a 5 or 10 pack for like 30% off, BUT that’s a lot of printing!

I know the ikea table idea you’re talking about, definitely seems like an easy solution without having to create a design from scratch. And it’s pretty cheap. I never printed ABS or filaments that required high temps or required slow cooling, so I didn’t go down the route of an enclosure.

A friend has a few different printers, the most impressive for what I need being an Elegoo Mars. It's a resin printer do its messier and a bit more work. But the results make filament prints look so crude. No lines, crisp detail etc.

Can you obtain acrylic too? I dont know where youre located, but sure youre not too cloes to me. If you could get teh panels and cut them I could just make one trip.
But that's still a bit out,

@Jerzsubbie so an enclosure isnt really all that needed? Does it help at all?

Based on this thread, one spool of 'cool white' eSun has been ordered!

An enclosure is needed for ABS since it has to cool slowly. It can also be helpful from an efficiency standpoint for more advanced materials that require higher heat.

PLA doesn’t require an enclosure. In fact, PLA doesn't even require a heated bed, though it’s helpful.

We don't have a wholesale supplier. I usually just purchase from Amazon for specialty stuff or get whatever Lowes has in stock.

Can this machine run ABS through it?

ABS stronger than PLA?

Well Ive bought black, white, red, and lime green filaments.
Some PLA, some ABS
But trying to have stuff here so when it arrives and I get it set up there will be no holdups

@HMP I'm in Rutherford County. I have no problem cutting something and shipping it to you if needed. I just need drawings. Panel size, hole spacing, stuff like that. Napkin sketches work if you don't have a CAD system. DXF or CorelDraw files work too. :)

Hey man if you need some practice when it comes in I’ve got a file for a dope card holder for my rifle.

Some quality of life upgrades I'd recommend:

Easy/beginner:
  • 3 point bed for easy leveling since 3 points will always be a flat plane
  • cable chain so they don't get snagged
  • control knob upgrade
  • bed leveling stl convenient for leveling
  • pressure fitting fix so the bowden tube doesn't get released by accident
  • ribbon cable clip
  • drawers to stash things
  • filament drybox (example) since moist filament is brittle and stringy
  • IP Webcam android app lets you use an old phone to watch your print
  • metal extruder feeder so the abrasive filament won't cut through
  • 2 layers of cardboard under your bed to insulate it for faster heating and better efficiency
  • put some thermal paste (like what's used for computers) on the hot end heater and thermometer
  • grease your z axis rod (the spiral gear rod thing) or it'll squeak
  • loctite your screws as you assemble
Medium/Novice:
Hard/advanced:
  • klipper + DWC web interface lets you control the printer remotely and offload the curve calculations to a stronger raspberry pi as well as print faster with pressure advance control. I've gotten up to 300 mm/s prints without major issues
  • dual z axis + frame brace for a more stable print
  • silent driver/32 bit board significantly quieter than the standard controllers
  • all metal hot end if you want to print ABS and hotter. note these do need to have their retraction messed with or they will jam. reviews are hard to use since people seem to not know that when they get them

Jesus, what a post! This is overwhelming, but that's good! I'll be looking through all of this soon, might try to make that dry box soon (though it looks like some of the parts are 3D printed parts lol).

First week of ownership and Im not pleased.
I cant comment on how the prints are as I CANT print.
I'll post pics later, but they drilled a hole a little off center/not even with another, so one of the uprights is crooked and the power supply hits the bed. They're not easy to deal with, being 12 hours ahead of us etc

wife told me i should go ahead and get a decent 3d printer for my birthday... shoot is it next week already? yep. it sure is.
I really don't want to spend 3-400 right now though.

I hope yours doesnt have any issues lol

As a person on the fence and following this thread to see how it goes before pushing the button this worries me...
Sorry you're running into these problems but please keep us updated!

Ok, on the right youll see a support that is horizontal to the table/ground/earth/whatever
In the middle of it (front to back) there are two holes that are pre-drilled so that the piece (well one of them, there are two together) that's standing up on the back wall on the left (tallest ones standing up) can screw into it, with the other screwing into matching holes on the left side of the machine

KM1IqjE.jpg

Well those holes are just SLIGHTLY off
The problem is that the power supply mounts there and it causes it to hit the bed
I put my square up to it to show how much a slight misalignment can cause a large issue several inches out

ItG7k9U.jpg

Look, Im sure this is rare. And Im certain that once the piece arrives and I swap it out that I'll have hundreds of hours of great times and printing. But, as of now, it's still a pile of parts waiting.

Just like front site movement.

Or a barrel shoulder that isn’t square causing a baffle strike.

Exactly, it doesnt take much to really screw stuff up.
And I could probably go ahead and hook everything up with the power supply not mounted, but Id be taking it all apart soon to replace that one piece, it's not worth it to me.
Shame. Soon though

June 8th I emailed them about the faulty part
Magically this week, on July 29th, I got a part in from China...the wrong part.

Ive disputed charges with CC already and they are investigating it, but that'll take a while.

Ive written Creality back and informed that I was surprised to receive a piece from them, equally surprised they shipped the wrong piece. I had been detailed in my communication with them on what was wrong.
They asked me to send pictures of the defecting part. I told them that I had already and requested refund. Again.
They keep telling me theyll fix it, but Im not taking that. It was almost 2 months to get in the wrong part, I cant keep waiting months for HOPEFULLY the correct item.

Dealing with a business in China has been frustrating as hell. And my hands are tied.
Im not stating I wont buy another Creality product...but it wont be from them directly
