Figured I would post a question for the expert. Going on a Bison Hunt in February with my 50 Alaskan lever gun..50 B&M is still in process. Any recommendations for bullets? Have 500 Woodleighs on hand and 640gr lead. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Well, what you have on hand will without a doubt work. Of the two you mention go with the Woodleigh 500. Assuming those are Flat Nose softs......... .510 caliber lever gun bullets have always been short, either some sort of cast and not very many other choices....... I still have a couple of .510 caliber Alaskans, I had Dan at CEB make a 350 gr Lever Raptor and matching 400 gr Solids....... that is what I would use to be honest...........
Probably use the Raptor on First shot and follow up with the Solids......... I have data on the 350 Raptor with 67/H-4198 for 2190 fps......... I have not loaded the 400 Solids, but would start those at 64--65/H-4198 and try them.

If you didn't want to go to the expense, then the 500 Woodleighs will work fine......... I show data from some years ago with the 500 Woodleigh 59/RL 7 for 1810 fps and

Do Keep us posted on your progress............. I still have a Ruger #1 that I had converted to 510 Alaskan and a Stainless Guide Gun as well........ Both lots of fun........I need to get busy and load some shelf ammo for those guns.

Will do. Was the guide gun built by SSK? Also, just curious have you done any work with AA2015 or LT-32 in the 50 Alaskans? Thanks

Yes, Brian at SSK built both the Ruger#1 and the Marlin....... No on the AA2015 or LT-32, have never worked with those powders........

Thanks. Been experimenting with other calibers and utilizing those powders in a similar burn rate to the 4198, re7, etc.

Bullets performed well on Bison. The one shot that looks like a perfect mushroom was a little back of the boiler room and did not hit any bone.

Very Very Excellent @17tombstone ...................... Two Rounds fired? I am not surprised you recovered the bullets. I assume far side hide?

The only thing that could be better would be an exit..... I like one shot, two holes.......... But I would not expect the Woodleighs to exit, just too much mushroom...

Well done, thanks for posting............

That is correct far side hide. Hate to say it but there was a 3rd shot that probably was not necessary that ended up going through which was a closer range. I am fighting giving up on the iron sights!

I might not even see a damn bison without a scope...... LOL..............
