Well I finally managed to check off the 1000 yard shot from my bucket list this past Friday, I actually managed to get on the 1040 yard & 1200 yard gongs with the 6.5 Grendel at Bang Steel.

I’m still super stoked about it and I’m extremely glad that my hours of reading and asking a gazillion questions actually made it through the thick mass between my ears lol

I also got to watch @Zbizzle911 hit the 1 mile target a few times with his 6.5 Creedmoor and that was honestly pretty damn epic! I ran out of scope at 1200 so I didn’t even give it a try, the reality is 1000 was my goal and 1200 is icing on the cake!!

I was able to put a few rounds through Ron’s .338 Lapua and wow, that caliber is a beast! I can definitely see a super magnum in my future, but I’d probably have to sell a kidney to feed the dang thing.

Woot! Shooting at distance is all kinds of fun!

Can you tell me about your Grendel? I have tried 2 different uppers with disappointing results.

Build specs or factory build info?
Factory Load?
Handload specs?

I really really want to use this cartridge for mid-range matches!

Let's hit VOD up and you can put mine through it's paces, it's an Aero based build with a Ballistic Advantage 18" barrel. It'll surprise you, I promise.

It is a 24" and 123 gr ELD-M hand loads. I'm sure he will chime in in a bit with the rest. It was impressive for sure. I honestly didn't think it would have enough steam for the 1200 but it did it just fine.

Hey man, it’s built on an Aero upper & lower with a Brownells/Satern 24” 5R 1/8 barrel with a Fail Zero BCG, the bolt that came with the barrel broke after 1000-1200 rounds so I replaced it with a Maxim bolt, I “believe” the original bolt also came from Maxim but I’m not positive, this is a Type II barrel & bolt, I’m running an 6-24 Vortex Diamondback scope in a Warne 20 MOA Mount (which is imo incredible for the money).

The load I was shooting is straight off of Alexander Arms website which is 31.5gr of BLC2 and a 123gr ELD Match bullet in Hornady Brass with a CCI 41 primer.

If you would like more info let me know but I doubt the rest of the build will effect much, for example I’m running the LaRue MBT flat face 2 stage trigger, while it is “better than average” it ain’t a Geissele for sure, but at $90 I’d recommend it all day long because the trigger is absolutely amazing for the price imo.

EDIT: Dan at Bang Steel asked what load I was shooting and he grinned from ear to ear when I told him I was shooting the AA Load, he said it is one of his favorite loads and I made an excellent choice to use it, I was humbled and proud at the same time because Dan & Forest know their stuff, both of them were super stoked seeing the 6.5 Grendel reach out to 1200 and their coaching & comments made me extremely comfortable while shooting.

Edit 2: if you ever want to meet up and shoot my rifle let me know and I’ll be happy to meet you somewhere, once TRC near Fayetteville opens you can shoot to 600 yards, if Frontline Defense is closer we can meet there as well, I’m in the process of loading 250 of the same load right now and I’ll be happy to meet up with you, the Hornady Black 123gr ELD match factory load if almost identical to the load I’m shooting so you will have zero issues with finding ammo for your Grendel.

Absolutely man, even with an 18” barrel you are good to 1000 yards with the right scope & Mount.

I am 1000% biased when it comes to the Grendel because it is an amazing caliber, but hunting medium game inside of 500 yards I’d actually recommend the 6.8 SPC II, but if someone was looking for a 1k caliber with the ability to shoot Varmints & medium I’d preach Grendel all day long!

Thanks!

I need to stretch out my 6.5 sometime.

Shooting the Grendel to its potential is very satisfying man, you’ll have a blast!

I’m not current on public ranges down your way but I’ve been able to find 2 ranges within a 2 hour drive from Greensboro that go out to 500-600 yards.

The Range Complex in Autryville (south of Fayetteville) and Frontline Defense in Warrenton NC both have range steel setup on their rifle ranges, both of these are a long haul for you though.

I have never shot 6.5 Gr, but always wanted to. That's some great shooting, Tex! The .338 Lapua, I love me some of that.

I’m running a 20” Tbox barreled upper.

I plan on getting new glass for it soon, looking at the Primary Arms 3-18 line.

Nicely done! I'm happy to hear it.....
Maybe one day I'll get out that far! LOL.

I have 1 box of 6.5 Grendel ammo that I cannot use, because I don't have that caliber rifle. My sweet wife got it for my birthday, thought it was .50 Beo. It's Alexander Arms 120 BT Nosler.

You need to inform her of the rules. You are now obligated to build a rifle in that caliber.

Still looking for best offer on that ammo. There have been no offers thus far, so the "best offer" will be easily won. I know we don't do auctions, but when an ad says " or best offer", it has become an auction.
