Found a good deal on an AR in 6.8 spc.Know nothing about the caliber. What is it good for and what is it lacking?Don't "need" another caliber in AR form but if it is "cool" lol I don't mind buying it and some ammo.

I built one using a Bison BSP upper. It’s cut down to 12” now. If I ever hunted, it’s what I’d grab.

Great choice in a SBR, a 12.5" is my ideal setup for deer. Any specifics on the one you are looking at, mainly the barrel?

I hunt deer with my 6.8, great round. I also have a 6.5 grendel. The 6.8 has taken care of everything out to about 200 yds without a hitch.

It is an Olympic Arms rifle with what appears to be their SS barrel.

What’s the twist rate and rifling?

It’s a great dear round and can be pushed if you reload. I have an 18” ARP barrel and she is a minute of venison up to 300 yards.

I’ll probably take mine bear hunting this year if I can’t get the kinks worked out of my 358win.

The 6.8 is good in short barrels all the way up to 20”. After 20 you’re not gaining much. It shines well in 12.5, 16, and 18” barrels.

Factory ammo has decent selection, reloading is where you’ll gain a lot. Lots of good hunting/SD/HD bullets to choose from.

More than likely a 1:10 with the saami chamber, I'd pass unless the deal is good enough for a new ARP, Bison or Wilson combat barrel.

Saami chambers for the 6.8 are dinosaurs. Any pipes from one of the above will work great and be safe.

6.8’s are real good to rebarrel and use as a 6.5 grendel ;)

As a shooter of both, sold off the grendel once I started on the Creedmoor. If you want to throw a 6.5 bullet with authority, the g isn't it.

Not to say the g isn't a good round, it was as accurate as my 6.8 but stayed in the safe more.

Cartridge was designed to function thru full auto guns with short barrels and put bad guys down with more authority then 5.56mm. Designed by 5th SFGA, Remington and AMU in early 2000s. Great deer hunting round for 300m and under. The cartridge designer Steve Holland is a good friend of mine. The 6.5 Grendel was designed concurrently for a longer range cartridge out of the semi AR but not full auto. Also very suitable for deer hunting with edge for longer range. 6.5 shoots .264" bullets where the 6.8 uses .277".

Decided to pass.Just don't need it (plus I am going to pick up a lever action .357 this weekend).

Thanks for all the knowledge.

After reading this thread it has got me thinking about building a 12.5” rifle as a hunting platform for my oldest. I checked my normal places for parts but it seems 6.8 is pretty rare for them. Where do I need to be looking?

I used to spend a lot of time on 68Forums, and those were the two I remember. Alas, 68F sold out to the Canadians and I haven’t been back.

I can vouch for Bison Armory's quality. I have their 18" SPR profile & it is a tack driver.
This. I have the same barrel and it consitentally makes me look like a better shot than I am. Really shines with the SSTs.

I've not shot any of the GDs yet, but SSA loaded Speer TNTs shoot under 3" @ 300 yds.

ETA- mine also shoots the SSTs really well. I went with the 110gr AB because I'd read a few things about the SSTs tearing up more meat & I got a pretty good deal on a bunch of the SSA loaded 11ogr ABs. I've got a few hundred of the SSA loaded 95gr TTSX, but haven't tried any yet.

The only possible issue I have had with the SSTs is one blew up on a high shoulder shot I took on a small doe and I ended up loosing the deer to coyotes. Until then every deer I shot with them was dropped like a rock. I bought a pile of both 6.8 SST and VMax from a guy and looking back I think it possible that a 110gr VMax got mixed in with the SSTs.
