Looking at dropping a piece of glass onto a 6.8 spc AR for hog and deer hunting with an occasional range trip to stretch it's legs. Hunting distances will be <200 yds and target distances out to 500.

I'm leaning 2-7, but have read 1-4 or 1-6 are also worth considering.

While I'm asking about optics... which quick disconnect mount would you recommend? Something reasonable.

Thanks.

I have a 3.5-10 on mine and love it. I do not have QD mounts on it as it is a dedicated hunting rifle but have really like the DNZ mount I used.

I'd go for a quality 2-7 or 1-6 if hunting is the purpose. The lower magnification comes in handy stalking hogs. The upper 6 or 7x comes in handy out in the field when a 200 yard shot presents itself.

A 2-7x32 is what I mainly use for all around hunting. A 1-6x sounds great for the 6.8 ar15, I just simply haven't purchased one because of the 2-7's I already own. There have been times in thick cover 1x would have been easier. 6x is plenty enough magnification for shooting big game at 200 yards. If deer hunting with the 1-6x take a good pair of 10x binoculars to judge the deer further off or at 200. If I was buying new, I'd go with those 1-6x's if the money wasn't a concern. A quality 2-7x can be had for less.

I have a 2x7 on mine but about 150 yards is as far as I would be able to use it in a hunting situation. At the range 300 is the limit. If I had access to shoot somewhere at 500 I have other rifles that I would break out first.

My buddy had a 2-7x32 Leupold on his and it was a great fit. I killed several deer with it in the 200 yard range with zero issues

Thanks. Based on my budget...I may be looking at some 2-7. The QD just makes storage easier.

I have a 4-12x40 Vortex from Cabanas that I need to return (never mounted). Planning to use that as credit towards a purchase.

'preciate the info...

I am 6.8 SPC clueless, but I put a Leupold VX3 2.5-8 x 36 on one rifle and it is excellent. I also have a VX3 1.75-6. X 32 and that is very good too. It may just be in my head, but the 2.5-8 just seems more clear and crisp. Not sure if the 36 vs 32 make that much of a difference or not.

I use the Vortex Viper 2-7x32 on my 6.8 AR & love it. That size & magnification just make a great, all around hunting scope. I would need more magnification if I were gonna shoot past 300yds, but since I rarely have the chance to shoot past 100yds, it's a non-issue.

@Crazy Carl that's the exact scope I'm thinking of getting...

My eyes are still pretty awesome, so >300 may still be possible, but it's not a critical must-have as I have other tools for longer distance work...

My eyes aren't that great, so I need a little magnification. FWIW, I run a Redfield 3-9x40 on my inline smokepole & never found the 3x to be a handicap, even inside 15yds (we hunt the THICK stuff).

The 2-7x scopes are a nice compact size & have enough magnification for 99% of most folks' uses.

At the range (mount is a DNZ game reaper)-

I was in a stand, just inside the woodline, when this little cow-horn stopped broadside, at about 50-60yds. 110gr Nosler Accubond shut him down like hitting a light switch. My first, true DRT & the damnedest thing I'd ever seen.

I hunt with my 6.8, but also like making tiny groups at the range, so I use a 4-12x40 Redfield Revolution with Nikon P series mounts. My eyes ain't what they used to be, so the extra magnification helps.
I also have a Redfield Revenge 2-7x34 on one of my 7.62x39 AR's, and it's got good glass too. These can be found under $100, and are a bargain.

Here in North Carolina you will many hunt thicker cover. Anything beginning over 3X will be a handicap. 2-8 or 3-9 for hunting unless you plan to hunt long range fields in the eastern part of the state and glass the area. Vortex or Leupold would be my choices. Leupold will have better light transmission at prime shoot times, dusk and dawn. Mount high for an AR and get as much eye relief as possible so your nose is not on the charging handle when the gun recoils.

Both outsource parts from the Asian market but Japanese glass is just better than everything but German lens. Gotta pay the huge bucks for German glass. Vortex has the majority of their lines produced by Philippine scope companies with Vortex specs. Their expensive scopes are made in Japan. Leupold gets part from pretty much from the same sources but assemble in the states I believe.

I never cared for allot of magnification. My farthest harvest was 300m on a whitetail in southwest Texas with a 2.5x on my FAL. Use just enough to ID the target and gather light and keep wide of full for SA (must be the combat vet in me). Do shoot with both eyes open. Last several years have hunted with either a 4x ACOG or Aimpoint on my 14.5" 5.56 carbine. Just built a 20" M16A4 clone so ACOG went on that. Busted several prairie dogs with it last month in ND.

I also enjoy shooting service rifle. 14.5" M4 out to 500 yds, M16A2 out to 600yds and M14 National Match out to 1000 yds all with irons.
