    Talk to me about this.

Can I just change the barrel on a 308 and use the magpul AICS mags?

I’ve been looking at it and others for my next prs rig. Here’s a good video by David tubb about it. I’ve got a buddy who has one and likes it. Seems like barrel life is fairly low like all hot 6mm’s. I think @Joker00 shoots it some too.

6Dasher is probably the best on barrel life of the 6 wildcats.

I want a lighter recoiling 1k yard capable round.

Xc will do it but it won’t be low recoil like the dasher. The guy I know who shoots it said it’s like the win mag of the 6mm’s. Maybe 6mm ARC? Or just go 6 creedmoor and put a nasty brake on it?

Nothing wrong with the 6xc II. I've had almost every 6mm out there. There isnt much recoil difference between the 6 dasher and the 6xc. 6x ii is made to shoot the 115 dtacs from tubbs. That was the problem for me since there was more than a .010 thou difference from the ogive to the base of the bullet between lots. I've ran the dtacs at 3180 fps which the dasher will never dream of running anything over 100 gr that fast.

If you want to run expensive brass and/or fire form then go with the dasher *taking away barrel life*. Barrel life is subjective to pressures and the quality of metal used. Some manufacturers will unknowingly get a bad batch of metal. I've seen some high dollar maker barrels go out at 600 rounds where the first 3 inches of rifling was smooth past the chamber.

Personally I would stay away from the 6arc in a bolt gun. With it's weird bolt face you are stuck with it esp if you get an action trued. Too many other tried and trued chamberings to pick from.

If you can win with a dasher then you can win with a 6 creed. And to be honest one of the best rounds for prs is the 6 creed. If you want speed out of it then run h4350. If you want lower pressure, longer barrel life and run dasher speeds then fill it with 4831sc. Brass is way more available as well

Why not a 6GT so that you can use regular AI mags and not have to fire form brass

    @Joker00

So what I know is, I want to run a 6mm bolt gun, and use my Bergara HMR in 308.

So taking that in consideration, would it better to just send it to Bergara and pay them 600 bucks to change the barrel to 6mm CM?

I wouldnt send it back to begara. There are plenty of well known gunsmiths here in NC. I've used gray sloan at swift creek rifles at lot. He is top notch and people from around the world send him guns. I believe he is around 495 bucks to chamber a barre . Add 300 or so for a good barrels and you are ready to shoot.

Joel pendergraft is out of the Raleigh area and has a really fast turn around. He is either on par or a little cheaper than gray. Pendergraft has set world records in bench rest.

I do my own barrel work now and I'm just waiting for my ffl to come in so I can start doing them for customers.

Here’s another thought, sell the Bergara and another gun I don’t shoot.

Buy a RPR in 6 Creedmoor, and then when the time comes, get an LRI replacement.

Nothing wrong with the bergara or the rpr. Lri makes a great barrel

The only gripe I have with the rpr is that you are stuck with the platform. You can change the forearm and switch out the buttstock but still feels like the same rifle still. Not much to make it your own. Bergara you have the choice of all the makers of stocks and chassis for the 700. Just my opinion

So, here’s an option I’m looking hard at:
Ruger Predator 6mm Creedmoor, Oryx Chassis, and Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56 MRAD

Once the barrel is killed, switch to a LRI or equivalent.

I’ve got one in 308. It’s a shooter. Mines in a magpul hunter stock. MDT makes a chassis for it too I think

I got a 6cm you can try out. @Bob Reynolds cut the barrwl for susans 6 cm. She has shot 1200 yards with it and you can get reallh good factory ammo for it and cases are plentiful.

Folks I have the tooling for both 6 and 6.5 creedmoor. If the barrel blank is already profiled I can chamber head space crown and thread the barrel for $225.00 profiling is additional

Short answer to your question is yes, you can swap the barrel on your Bergara HMR and shoot 6XC from the magazine. You may me limited in the OAL of your loads, as they have to fit in the magazine. I have a older Tubb Spec-Tac-LR rifle in 6XC, which uses the SR-25 pattern magazine, and I have never had an issue with feeding from the magazine and I shoot 115 grain DTAC bullets. I cannot speak to the barrel life question, as it does not concern me. As for comparing recoil in 6mm cartridges, I would think it would be more dependent on the barrel length and profile, than the 6mm variant you choose. If you do choose 6XC, I recommend joining the TUBB® original 6XC and 33XC/37XC/41XC run by David Tubb, Facebook group, as there is no better source for information on the cartridge, from the man who invented it. Just my 2 cents.

yea, I watched that, and figured a re barrel would happen soon. I’m looking at options to get me going quick, then upgrade.

So those options would get me going for a little bit, then upgrade the trigger and barrel

The savage elite precision rifle is a hell of a deal. Can find it for 1500. It comes in an mdt acc chasis that sells for 1k alone. I just got one and it looks like it is going to be a tack driver.

One word of advise if you go creedmoor and get small primer brass you will need to get the firing pin bushed. Small primer brass last longer when reloading. But the 308 bolt head will blank it even at factory loads. It is designed for large primer brass.

To the OP......some cartridges with wide flatter shoulders dont feed from magazines very well...such as the 6BR. Im not saying it cant be done but most of those are single shot rifles. If being able to use a magazine is a priority....look into it. Some of those bench rest cartridges are awesome.

With redding dies you dont have to. The come with the smaller decapping pin.

10 round group during break in. Factory ammo, reloads will improve it. Finishing breakin will improve it.

Nothing to do with dies. The firing pin and the spacing around it in a 308 bolt is too big. It does this.

    20200607_173144.jpg

    After bushing it does this.

Just FYI, Bergara 6.5 bolts are also not made for small primer brass. If you want to load small primer brass for a Bergara, you need to get the bolt hole bushed and/or make sure it has a new milled bolt shroud and not the early/stock stamped one.
