Been thinking about trying my hand with an 80% lower. Looking for recommendations on lowers and jigs. Anyone with some experience that doesn't mind offering some advice on the dos and don'ts?

No. To me the AR platform is just the lego of firearms. Nothing special for me.

That's what I was thinking. It seems fairly straight forward. Guess my main concern was the jigs. I've read some online reviews but didn't know if there was really any difference in them.

In all honesty, you do need a milling machine.
I have seen videos that were done with a router , but that is WAY to many rpm
to cut aluminum with.

What about an end mill for a drill press?

Some jig kits come with the end mill. I think 5/16" or 3/8" Dia.
Google is the best resource for info.

There is another company that runs pretty much the exact same jig style but in red. Haven’t had an issue with different name brands lowers on the jig.

Haven’t had an issue with milling lowers out with a router and the kit above. I did end up chewing a bit of cause I got careless.

I have to disagree about needing a mill. Unless you already have on then sure, but for doing your own lowers, a router and bench top kit will be fine

They make a huge mess with the shavings.

Router works fine in my experience. The big thing is to take tiny cuts and take chips out frequently. I've done several with the 80% lower peoples jig and it works fine. I'm going to do some more in a bit.

It DOES make a ton of chips. Do it outside if possible.

WD-40to use as cutting fluid. Get a shop vac and air show get the chips out to stay clean.

Drill press while it can be done is not mean to have side load (end mill cut on the side)

If you get a router try to find one that has 10,000rpm vs a 25,000. Let the cutter do the cutting, you are there just to guide it.
