I'm planning on building a bolt gun. Budget as possible. I'm looking at a howa 1500 action in 308 with a heavy 20" barrel. Will be placed into a B&C Medalist light stock. Will have my athlon argos sitting on top. My questions

Does it really matter if I get a aluminium scope base or should I get steel? Will be 20 moa.

Should I have the barrel threaded for a break?

Is the new magpul bipod my best bet?

Is federal gold match 174gr still my best bet on ammo?

I would opt for the steel mount, an ounce or three won't make a difference.

A definite yes for a brake. .308 recoil isn't terrible, but after a long range session your shoulder will feel it. The main reason is to get the crosshairs back on target a millisecond sooner.

I don't know which bipod is best, but each rifle likes one load best. You won't know until you try them all or tailor a load.

I just got an atlas, was surprised that i actually didnt like it. I've got some harris and a "cvlife" with notched legs that all work great. Like them a lot. But I will be trying the magpul bipod for sure. Looks really well designed and at a decent price too.

Atlas. Love mine. Although Magpul is known for making good stuff.
Howa. Great action.
Threaded. Yes.
Seekins Precision. Aluminum is fine.
Depending on twist rate. I have the 169’s to shoot better then anything in the 170+ range.

Lol thanks guys.

Well this got put on the back burner. I was going to sell my 223 DMR to my dad to shoot and build this 308 but the old man decided using my 6.5 grendel with a 5R 20inch barrel( AR15) would be better to learn from as he wants a gasser 6.5 creedmoor. Lol
