Sometimes on here we are kind of rough on the police when one screws up, so I decided that the next time I had a good cop story I'd try to give it equal time. So here goes.

Yesterday I drove from Greenville NC to Bellhaven, 51 miles, to do some kayak fishing. Had a nice time but caught nothing. Back in Greenville with the wife eating dinner, and realized that my tackle box wasn't in the truck. I figured out I had probably left it on the river's edge. I was able to reach a police sergeant in Bellhaven, who told me he'd go out there and search for it. About 20 minutes later, he called back to say he had it. I drove the 51 miles again, and he was waiting for me at the PD. I tried to give him a gift certificate to Parker's BBQ, and he said he couldn't take it. I asked him if he knew of any families in town that could use it. He agreed to take it as a donation for the needy in town.

This is a well furnished tackle box, and it was worth the 100 mile round trip in the fog, but I don't know if I would have driven it without knowing it had been recovered. He didn't have to go out there in the dark and mud with a flashlight, I wasn't even a resident, he would never see me again, but he did it anyway. So thank you, sir!

That's cool but WTF are you doing calling the PD for gear you forgot? Seems like a misuse of the PD's time. Guess Bellhaven either has little crime or too many cops.

See, the cops still can't do anything right! He should have been out fighting crime instead of retrieving your stuff. The town should adjust the number of cops they have because they obviously have too many he they have time to do petty stuff like that.
Everyone yearns for Sheriff Taylor and then someone posts a Mayberry story and the cops are still not doing like they should.

If I had a buddy in Belhaven, I would have called him, but I don't. And the Parks and Recreation Department was closed at 8:00 on a Saturday night. I asked for a favor, he could have told me he was busy, but I trust that he knows whether he has the time or the inclination to do it. Maybe he was just thinking that if he lost his tackle box one day, maybe someone would do a kind thing for him. Maybe he's the sort of guy that got into the business because he likes to help people.

I wasn't calling out the cop Mr Sensitive. You have issues. I was calling out the OP. I would either drive back and get it myself or own the fact I lost it.

Glad you got your tackle box back. Glad that the guy you called was friendly and helpful. I wish more were.

Yeah, I've got issues but you are the one with your panties in a wad because a guy has the idea to call and see if the cops could give him a hand. Oh the horrors of a taxpayer getting help from a taxpayer funded agency in a small town.

IMO he was imposing on them. Not what I would do, but whatever works I guess. But yes if the cops have time to go chase after forgotten stuff maybe there are too many cops. Guess that falls under 'non-essentail' government employee. Next time My kid leaves her water bottle at the park I'll call the local PD to go grab it for me. ;)

Society benefits from having a group of people that they can turn to when they need help at various times. Having a local police, who have presumably been vetted and trained and are there to help can be a good thing. For the most part this what the police were when I grew up in a small town. It’s a very different model than what we have today with “law enforcement”. Even the terminology is different.

Um, isn’t the schedule of a patrol officer highly elastic?
I have friends who are cops who tell me sometimes they run from emergency call to emergency call, and other times they don’t get a single call all day. Just depends on the weather, or the full moon, or whatever.

Meh...I have no problem with asking the cops. He didn’t dial 911. If they don’t have time they don’t have time. It’s not like he demanded they go do it for him.

I think a lot of cops, and especially ones in smaller towns, probably realize that taking care of tourists is pretty important.

The way this cop acted is the way they all did when I was a kid.
They were actually there to help when needed.
Glad there are still some like that still around.

Most of them at any rate. The ones that didn’t were usually talked about with derision in local gossip and didn’t last too long.
