I'm gonna just ask a question, don't need to be flamed on or anything. I'm just a questioning type of a guy that doesn't like the "that's just how it is" answer.
Question: on an HD/SD only type of an AR (assuming 100 yards and under of engagement distance), why mount an RDS and a light ? Wouldn't a light/laser combo work as well and keep the weight down ? BUIS would be mounted as always.

Just looking for a little discussion and opinion...

I would think it’s speed of target acquisition,
As well as a visible laser can give your position away.
Also, a lot of laser users tune the laser to shoot dead on a specific range ie 1” groups at 50 yards

RDS is more reliable than a laser.

RDS doesn't reflect off a mirror or stainless appliance in the house and cause issues (I had a laser on an HD pistol and managed to blind myself temporarily investigating a weird noise in the living room).

RDS doesn't mark your position (as stated above).

Laser could be hard to see in bright light/ outdoors further distances.

RDS encourages better weapon control...I’ve seen folks on the range barely mounting the gun and just pointing the laser.

This right here. Only laser I’d want on my hd sd ar would be IR but then I’d have to have nods so that’s not going to happen lol

That’s too bad you don’t have NODS...
I have a mil issue M203 electronic sight with IR Laser...
Cheap

Try a green laser...... I just acquired a TLR HL G to put on my Tac 14 for in house use. Before I mounted it I took it outside about 4:00 pm and the laser was plainly visible on trees that were 200+ yards away. At night the green was visible as far as I had something to shine it on. Green definitely changes the game over red...

This is true.

As a general rule anything that is a "combo" - will do both things below average. Usually better to get items that do the one thing that you want it to do.

I think a light and sling are the main things to go with. RDS is a plus but not needed. A sling is more important especially if you have family members. I can acquire irons just about as fast as I can a red dot so you can train that in. The biggest thing is to get used to your equipment through constant training. You'll find your loadout/ rifle set-up is constantly evolving. A laser is added weight to the other end of the rifle and to me, it's just not worth it. The light is enough weight by itself. I'm not going to war with it. Bad guy blasting is basically run what you brung. If a red dot gives you an advantage, use it!
