So I'm converting my Saiga and Ive decided to use magnifed optics on it. At this point I'm stuck between getting the the PA 1-6x 7.62x39 scope and an actual eastern bloc fixed power optic.

One one hand the new raptor FFP scopes are pretty nice on the other it would be pretty cool to have an actual POSP on the rifle even if it is a fixed power optic.

Any ideas or advice? I'm kinda set on the idea of magnifed optics and please no "RIFLE IS FINE" copypasta.

Well with a broad side barn shooter like a AK, missing the barn is not a situation of not seeing it, its more of a issue of distance.

Typically 50ft or less helps

:)

Oh, do not forget every 5ft closer is a 10% higher chance of hitting the target.

I know the ballistics of x39 leave something to be desired but Its damn near the same as .300blk so much so most .300blk optics will work just fine for x39 out to 400 ish yards.

I've thought about just leaving it with irons but I absolutely hate the AK irons even with an after market front sight and a upgraded rear.

This is the optic I am thinking about getting, http://russianoptics.net/simonov.html the only ones I can find online are made in Belarus. Its roughly the same weight as the PA 1-6x + MI ak mount. Heres the PA scope im thinking about http://www.primaryarms.com/pa-1-6x2...-scope-with-acss-raptor-762-reticle-wolf-grey

I'd go 1-4x. Really don't need more than that, and the ability to have a true 1x scope is good for close up shooting. Of course, if you get a POSP , it will be offset and you can still use the irons.

In all seriousness a fixed scope is all you'll need. 3X will do.
I think ill end up getting the primary arms 3x prism with x39 reticule. It has the same base as the acog so i can use a mount for one of those. PA is sold out but i emailed them and the gen 2s should be released the end of July so ill pick one up then.

I shoot 4X's on all my rifles. All my hunting needs are at 50ish yards. I can hit target way past that but besides fun I have no need for it.

Thread necro! @Prudii What did you end up deciding on? I have an AK that actually *does* group well, and I want to put a LPVO on it as well, using a Midwest Industries side-mounted rail. I'm doing my research into what would be best for a "solid mid tier" LPVO, and I figured you and the other AK guys might have some pointers.

And while yes, the "rifle is fine," it can be better, and an LPVO goes a long way towards making it better!

This. I bought a P4xi.

I don't currently have a optic on my AK but if I were to I would buy another LPVO. It would probably be another Steiner or a trijicon.

Vortex is also decent as well as the midrange stuff from PA. If its not made in Germany its probably made in Japan and if it is, it is most likely made by Light Optical Works. They make most of the midrange $400 to $1200 Japanese optics these days.

Thanks. Steiner was where I was steering. Their 1-4x LPVOs are on sale on Dvor right now, and a lot of the Gucci AR guys like to run the Steiners on their "budget" setups (I guess when they're used to Schmidt and Bender and Nightforce, it is a "budget" optic). So that's about the quality level I'm hoping for my AK. It's good to know that's the route you went, and that you'd go that route again. That's probably what I'll do too.

I am going to ask. The BDC on the Steiner P4xi, how does it relate to 7.62x39 ballistics? What ranges are its hashmarks at for, say, 122/124gr FMJ Tula?

I honestly don't know. Heres the sub tension graph. 7.62x39 is relatively close to super sonic 300blk trajectory so I suppose you could use LPVOs with a BDC for that. Primary arms makes one as does Trijicon, I'm sure there are others. The other option is just to get a MIL reticle and do the math. The dude from AKOU likes the PA one for what its worth.

Ooh. If Rob from AKOU likes it, I like it. I genuinely trust his recommendations, and if he likes the PA, I'm likely to go with the PA. It's even FFP too! That's neat. Sadly OpticsPlanet is sold out of the PA Raptor ACSS 1-6x 7.62x39 scope though, so I'll have to see where else I can find one.

I plan on getting the 3x332 one to put on my m92, I have the gen 1 2.5 prism the but the height barely gets me a chin weld. It works fine on my 300 build
