Against the expert and excellent advice in a previous thread, I went ahead and acquired a US Made Century C39 AK variant. For my purposes (giggles), it'll be fine.

Unfortunately, this one does not have a rail mount on the side of the receiver. So, I'm looking at the rail/mount that replaces the rear sight. Does anyone have 1st hand experience with these things?

Specifically that one from Strike Industries. I know there are more expensive units, but I'd rather not spend 25% of my investment in the rifle just on a rail.

ultimak is what you want. The rear sight ones are POSes in my experience unless it's the hinged PAP M92 cover ones. Midwest Industries has made their version of the gas tube forward scout type rail and it looks mo better than the Ultimak. But I've never heard anyone complain that the Ultimak didn't work for them.

I have a damage industries that is similar to the MI/Ultimak - I have no complaints with it, other then it was a PITA to install.

Just remember a 1x red dot should have unlimited eye relief which is why the ultimak type works so well. You can even cowitness with it.

Does it take a standard handguard? I loved my MWI rail handguard, alas I have to sell it ;)

Looks like it would fit actually. Definitely an easy way to mount an optic.

Don't buy one of those that replaces the rear sight. I had one on a 74 that Midwest Industries made and it wouldn't hold zero for crap and would work it's self up as you shot. It's a cool concept but no one has been able to pull it off.

This is the one I had

I have n ultimak on my AMD65. Works just fine but the PA microdot does not co-witness.
The Ultimak (in theory) will improve accuracy. It replaces the gas tube and is is clamped to the barrel, because it is shorter than your gas tube there is no hard contact.

AK Master Mount - a no-drill side mount that installs in about three minutes and gives you all sorts of optic options. Your rear sight also stays intact.

Also, if you're dead set on popping out that rear sight leaf, I do run a SOMAK on my WASR - https://www.circle10ak.com/product/circle-10-ak-somak-scout-optic-mount-ak/

It has held up well and retains zero, even after I've removed and reinstalled the red dot. It also has a notch cut out so you can use it as an iron sight. I posted a photo of the setup over in the pics thread. This is my only rear sight mount but I do like it a lot. However, I'd still recommend the Master Mount over these other options. Or, just get a WASR

Doesn't absolute co-witness on my M92, more like a lower 1/4, sights just barely visible thru the bottom of the optic, kinda like it.

Attero mounts have a good reputation and I have one on an AMD 65 that has held zero for about 400 rounds:

Considering how weird and proprietary a lot of what Century makes is, there's no telling if the holes are in the right place. o_O

Good grief, so true. I did check the manufacturer website though, and it does state that it fits the C39.

Best bets are the ultimak or a good dogleg (decent one is going to be $150+). If it were me I'd just get a rail plate and rivets (prob $50) and hit up someone near you building aks to install it. It's a half hour of measuring, drilling and bucking a couple rivits, most guys would do that for free if you brought over a 6-pack and talked guns.

Ultimak or MI gas rail, If you don't want a scout mount i'd say try and get some sort of receiver side mount.
