+1 to everything above. Whether you go WASR, SAR-1, RH10, or find a surplus Romy G kit, Romanian AKs are affordable, reliable, and solid. Just how I like my women.

If you don't go Romy, don't go American either for your first AK. It'll leave you lusting for the real thing.

Imports or bust...

WASR RI1805-N, a couple of E. German mags, couple of Yugo mags, couple of Romanian mags, and a case of 7.62x39 for $200 will land you just under $1k on the new market for something that works. May need to hit it with a file or tad bit of tweaking. If you take a liking your budget will get another "0" added to that initial figure.

Buy WASR or at least buy something NOT made in USA.

I’ve got an old WASR. There is nothing nice, refined, slick, smooth, or anything about it. But it shoots. And shoots and shoots and shoots.

I’ve considered selling it a few times as I rarely really “run it”. It’s a “have you ever shot an AK before?” gun that I keep around.

I say all that to say this: if all you want is a work horse that goes bang, then a WASR is good to go.

If a 120-pound peasant with beet-stained teeth managed to handle it, I know our boy @nature boy will be just fine. AKs rock, wooo!
Have you seen how small they are? They can’t eat because the AK broke their jaw!!!! Idk if you have met @nature boy ..... I’m not gonna say he is a big boy, but 450lbs ain’t small
