I've been out of the AK game for a while but recently picked up a nice build on a Bulgarian parts kit. I picked up some of the Bulgarian commercial 5.45 mags and am unimpressed by the wobble they have in the rifle. I've yet to fire it, these mags may function fine...I dunno. Surplus Bakelite mag fits beautifully in this rifle. What's everyone buying these days? These commercial mags GTG? Everyone buying the $50+ Bakelite mags? Something else?

Is the mag wobble side to side or front to back? Side to side is less cause for concern. I think I have one commercial Bulgy somewhere in the pile - the rest are primarily surplus Russian and ((10)). Have a few Romanian steel mags which are also quite nice, but pricey.

Two other commercial/cheaper options are Magpul's 5.45x39 PMAG and the newer AC Unity mags. I've had good luck with both of these but just don't run them very much. I prefer surplus whenever possible.

Wobble is side to side. They lock tight front to back. They may be fine. They have some steel reinforcement but I think the locking tab is all polymer.

The Bulgarian 74 commercial mags fit real loose but they still work in my experience.

The Magpul 5.45 mags are well worth the $12 too

I chose these over Magpul at about the same price because they have at least some steel in the construction. Of course the weak point is going to be the locking tab and both are plastic so there's probably little difference.

@jcornSS I will say this - with a nice Bulgy 74 build you owe it to yourself and that rifle of yours to grab at least one or two legit Circle 10 mags. They just belong together, period.

If you don't own any, a few retailers have them in stock (check out this thread for links - https://carolinafirearmsforum.com/index.php?threads/places-to-buy-ak-stuff.24556/). AKFiles and Arfcom also have plenty of members selling them in the marketplaces.

I agree. It is a nice build. I have the one Bakelite mag that came with the rifle and the underwhelming commercial Bulgarian mags. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get some nice ones and use these for range/training.

Yup, a few of us are doing the AK thing for this one. This match sold out in less than 30 minutes. I won a free slot is how I got in.

But yes a BAR would be epic. I'd love to do something belt fed myself..... Because reasons.

Piggybacking on @WadeWatts comments here ... another thing to look for are "sanitized" mags. Usually surplus plum mags painted black with the mold stamps filed off, in order to skirt import/export issues. Usually a bit cheaper. Nail polish remover and some mineral oil will clean and restore these mags to their natural combloc roots.
