On Sunday, Feb. 16, UNC Police arrested an on-campus resident in a residence hall for possessing a firearm on educational property. UNC Police were alerted to the weapon via anonymous tip from someone who had seen the weapon on social media.  UNC Police responded immediately and took the suspect into custody. The suspect is facing felony charges and is currently banned from the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. This investigation is ongoing.
Can I be on that jury, please, please, please? I have my nullification card polished and ready.

Got this as well. Curious as to the details. Was it a range photo? Photo of the piece in the dorm? So many questions.

It sounds like theres lots of variability in sentiment on that force. You get ridiculed for not carrying by one, another arrests guy on felony charges...

If the guy was responsible and had a safe to guard against theft, I hope they take it easy on him (assuming his character and intent also pan out). If he's just some idiot w/ a Saturday night special in sock drawer then, well, should have read the student handbook and residence policies.

Definitely aren't allowed to carry. My understanding is that you are allowed to have a handgun locked up within your vehicle if you have a CHP (see below). Having one in your dorm room is, unfortunately for this guy, a whole other ball of wax.

(a2) This prohibition does not apply to a person who has a concealed handgun permit issued in accordance with Article 54B of this Chapter, has a concealed handgun permit considered valid under G.S. 14-415.24, or is exempt from obtaining a permit pursuant to G.S. 14-415.25, provided the weapon is a handgun, is in a closed compartment or container within the person's locked vehicle, and the vehicle is in a parking area that is owned or leased by State government. A person may unlock the vehicle to enter or exit the vehicle, provided the handgun remains in the closed compartment at all times and the vehicle is locked immediately following the entrance or exit.

If they only knew the stuff we had in our dorms back when. :D
One guy hung a deer outside his third floor window. Saw him bring it back to the dorm in the hood of his car. Next thing I know it's handing out his window. Another emptied a 20 round magazine at a train as it passed by his dorm. I may or may not have shot at a sign across a parking lot from my window.

No. And I don't know that he did either. Story only said they saw it on social media not where they saw it.

Edited to say at least the part of the story I saw.

Ok so obviously he had a weapon on campus.(Illegal) The only question is what kind of social media post was made. He obviously broke the law either way and in a designated place he has chosen to give up his rights. After all the R.A. Has to inspect to make sure his room is clean not to mention the idiot keeping a gun in his room.

would having in dorm be a felony? are we just assuming he is under 21 or something.

@J R Green . Didn't ask for your sympathy and don't need it. You implied he was not responsible because he posted on social media "just like we all do.

@Cowboy . You asked the question if he posted a picture at the range or in the dorm and then said either way he wasn't to bright. Have you ever posted pictures at the range?

Do you think he was a smart feller? And No I have never posted pics of myself at the range.

(b) It shall be a Class I felony for any person knowingly to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property or to a curricular or extracurricular activity sponsored by a school. Unless the conduct is covered under some other provision of law providing greater punishment, any person who willfully discharges a firearm of any kind on educational property is guilty of a Class F felony. However, this subsection does not apply to a BB gun, stun gun, air rifle, or air pistol.

ah, this brings back memories...
screw the deans at wayne state university and the MSP for backing them without even understanding the laws they've sworn to uphold or the oaths they took.

Yeah, campus carry laws are on my s**tlist for this state.

When my nephew, a junior at App State, bought a Sig Saint AR-15, I made sure both he and his dad knew it was a felony to have that on campus. We can store a handgun in our cars on campus because GRNC fought hard for this one. I was in the room when the bill was in committee. The chiefs of police for every one of the 13 campuses came to the hearing, sat in a row, and when one of them read a statement asking the legislators not to pass it, the other twelve stood shoulder to shoulder and stared the committee down. It was intimidating as hell, and I don't think the legislators appreciated it. The bill passed without a single Democrat vote, but that's why you have campus storage of handguns in cars today.

And we wonder why ...

If he's just some idiot w/ a Saturday night special in sock drawer then, well, should have read the student handbook and residence policies.
Just to clarify, and I am sure you didn't mean it this way, the price of his gun or the quality has Nothing to do with this. I help folks with inexpensive guns just like I do with ones with expensive guns. Hell...probably more...

I find it a bit ironic that you say there's variability on the force and then you say, if he's as nice guy, go easy on him, but if he's a jerk, throw the book at him.
And, did you say, Saturday Night Special?

from my understanding, the connotation is “illegal street gun”

well, since I’m not an officer of the law I can have whatever personal feeling about enforcing it that I want.

my logic here is that if it’s not zero tolerance, and there’s is a broad level of discretion I hope they consider the context. Or maybe they should just go full boogaloo for ya

Just a clarification to clear up @BatteryOaksBilly's comment, Saturday Night Specials are typically just inexpensive handguns (commonly used in crimes since they can be easily tossed without much financial loss). These include brands like Phoenix Arms, Jennings, Hi-Point, etc. Hell, one of my first guns was a Saturday Night Special because I couldn't afford much more as a grad student.

Edit: Also, given how scared people at UNC are of a statue, I highly doubt this guy is going to get any lenency.

Not here. We search high and low and spend our own money so that people with tight finances can have a gun that Works. We heavily tested and passed on the SCCY and Taurus Spectrum. $139 guns that Work. Cheap is good for some folks.

Yeah, as a guy who would choose Glock over 1911 every time, certainly have no cost elitism. Thought the term specifically referred to cheap black market guns stolen from citizens and sold to criminals.

A whole lot of folks will talk trash about cheap guns but none who will stand in front of one and say "shoot me".

Can't we all just get along?!! Interesting discussion going. What was the subject? I may have forgotten...
