When storing ammo in say 50 or 30 cal. Cans do most of you leave it in the original boxes or dump it in for more space?
I have mine both ways but thinking of dumping it out for more room.
When I dump it out I usually leave a piece of the box for the info

Ammo cans....I leave mine in the boxes except for .45acp, which is all the same manufacturer/weight/ect. Cases stay in cases, all in a controlled environment.

Depends.
If I reload a few thousand it all goes in the can and marked with painters tape and sharpie as to what it is.
Most bulk boxes just stay in the box and mark new ammo so I can mix say 50/50 Brands in one can.
All PP ammo or hunting is in the factory pack or reloaded plastic box and in its own can. To make it easy and fast to find.

I store most of mine loose in ammo cans. Factory defensive ammo gets stored in factory boxes in ammo cans.

I like to keep everything in boxes. The thought of dealing with loose ammo when going somewhere to shoot sounds like a pain in the ass. MTM ammo cans are cheap enough to leave everything in factory packaging. They make every size you can imagine and some untraditional formats as well.

I keep it the original boxes, as I want to know the lot number if I have any issues.
This. Especially with as many recalls as there have been in the COVID era.

I also use the bigger 40mm cans for storage, and I'm not bringing those to the range with me. A lot easier to grab complete boxes and toss in the range bag than to start loading individual MTM cases or filling ziploc bags. For the most part, only my Federal eats up a lot of space because of the plastic trays they use. Everything else is either really tightly packed trays or alternating rounds in cardboard, so there isn't that much wasted space.

Keep it in the original boxes that way when you need to just take a few to the range it’s a quick in and out

I did that with a bunch of 22LR. I also store my bulk reloaded 9mm loose in 50-cal cans. My range bag "ammo cans" are pill bottles for 22lr and peanut butter jars for 9mm that I just top off before I go.

I save and reuse all my CCI plastic 22 LR boxes and reload my federal auto match in those

Slightly off topic, does anyone know of any ammo storage solutions that are designed to keep ammo organized inside a 50 cal can? I keep most of my reloads in plastic boxes inside ammo cans, but it's not an especially space-efficient setup. I usually have a few different flavors on hand, so I like to keep everything separated.

I moved away from plastic boxes and started using heat sealed plastic bags. Have a couple different sizes. I’ll print “labels” on plain paper, cut them out, and stick one in each sealed bag. Far more space efficient.

I use the styrofoam trays/cardboard boxes from Midway.

I keep in on original packaging so I can keep up with how many rounds I shoot. Well, everything but 22.
On a side note I only load 5rds at a time also. That way I seem not to waste a lot of ammo on mags dumps

Oh, for factory ammo it’s in original packaging, cases stacked off the ground.

MTM makes specific caliber cases (100 rds I think) that pack into their 50 cal boxes. I have one in .45 acp that does quite well. I think Fuquay gun has both.

MTM in 9mm

i personally would like to hear more about the bags .
when i reload i use the plastic 50 or 100 round boxes ,
make a tag and tape it inside the lid works great.
only new stuff i have stays the way it came.

12g and .223 are loose in 30cal cans, everything else is in the factory box, in cans. I’m not brand loyal, so I like to keep it separated in case I get a bad batch, or run across something that my gun doesn’t like.
.223 has been loose as long as I’ve been in the hobby, because the cheapest brass case stuff I used to be able to get my hands on came loose in a thin cardboard box that had zero structure to it, so I just started pouring it into the ammo can….never broke the habit 🤷🏼‍♂️

Cheers

Look for heat sealed plastic bags. I don’t vacuum pack them.
