I've looked at it, but haven't gotten involved. Supposedly their local chapter has a net on the .250, but I haven't tuned in to see if they really do.

I'm a member, but not very active. Listened in on the HF net once or twice. Basically in and out activity. Was thinking if any interest we could develop our own SHTF network using a mid to lower HF band.

I think that's kind of what htperry had in mind with this discussion over here? https://www.carolinafirearmsforum.co...idence-skywave

That is one of the threads that got me motivated to go ahead and jump in, I like the thought of a CFF network and I should have room to set up some kind of wire antenna. Looks like I will be able to borrow a transceiver from Jayne until I can pick up my own.

If you've seen my past post, you'll see I'm a big fan of 60M for this very operation. 60M works very well close in out to several hundreds of miles with the simplest of antennas, and 50 watts or less. On 40 or 75 one has to contend with stations running legal limit. No so on 60M. Also by 60M being channelized makes scheduled nets/round-tables even easier. I've been on 60M for years, and can count the number of times on one hand that all 5 freqs were occupied at the same time. When we are HF backpacking we let others know when we will be on, and we always begin on Ch1 and go UP if in use. Works every time.

Yes sir I did read that and figured we'd probably go 60M for this. The document you linked to in that thread said many radio manufacturers weren't including 5 MHz because it wasn't legal in Japan but it looks like the IC-718 Jayne has offered to let me use has it, specs say 0.03-29.999999 MHz.

I also have one of these for you: http://hamcall.net/7bandocf.html

It's a 7-bander, the only downside is it's freakin' huge. But if you've the trees, it should get you on the air.... except it doesn't do 60M without a tuner. Maybe it will tune up with the tuner I have? That's part of HAM though, gotta try stuff. Always knowing isn't fun, or something like that.

The only thing I don't have is the mic for the 718. I bought it used and the guy didn't have it but I didn't care because I either use my headset or a feed it into a digital mode box. Maybe someone can get you a mic from their parts bin.

IC-718 doesn't cover 60m without MARS mod, and then you may damage the radio or more specifically RF/band pass board. YMMV

First time, only time and last time I listened to AMRRON on the Greensboro repeater. I recorded it for someone on CSC. I didn't find it interesting. YMMV, again.

Seems to be from Icom.

Anyway if you fold the power down to 25 w or so (remembering the ERP limit on 60) you'll likely have plenty of headroom.

I've found that to be true with most any repeater activity.

That's the unmodified ham band range spec, yep!
