As previously posted, this ANCIENT Colt pre-ban range rental followed me home a while back.....

It took until the last month for me to get to finally disassembling the upper, and partially stripping the lower.
The upper was a soup sandwich, nigh on to THIRTY years of crud, sludge, and carbon buildup. The gas tube was so encased in carbon buildup it took vice grips and a mallet get it out of the front sight assembly and upper receiver, even a soaking in Kroil wasn't too much of a help.
Let me put it this way, this rifle has a history that's too "interesting" to get into here.
A few weeks ago I happened to come across a take off FN M-16A4 barrel at my local gun shop hangout that was well in excess of half the price I would've gotten my planned LMT replacement barrel for. So I bought the FN barrel. And this afternoon I installed it on the Colt upper. I'm going to do the final installation on Tuesday, since I had to go out in search of $#!+ tickets (better known to civilians as toilet paper) and paper towels, just to be on the safe side.
Here are a few pictures of the lower. This wasn't quite the soup sandwich that the upper receiver was, though it was very dirty.

On the shopping list at the moment are a set of 5.56mm Go/NOGO gauges, an at bare minimum Mil-Spec bolt carrier group, rifle length buffer spring, compensator crush washer, and Loctite to replace the three decade old thread locker I soaked and scraped off this week to set the oversized pivot pin and butt stock screw in place.

Nice find and rifle. I enjoy those types of projects.

Pictures tomorrow, wasn't feeling quite up to stopping by the shop this afternoon.

The shops got an Anderson BCG marked as MPI tested, its about seventy dollars less than a BCM BCG, Anderson guts any good?

So, shes back together, less the crush washer for the compensator.
I scrounged up semiauto bolt carrier and a new MPI tested bolt to go with the "new" barrel.
Generally speaking, shes still dirty, but I cleaned up all the vital areas during the time it was broken down. Considering the amount of filth in every nook and cranny inside of this rifle, only a complete stripping of the upper, lower, and every other part would get her truly clean, but, shes clean where it counts.

Just got the compensator on and timed, now all that's left is the range trip

Went to the Craven County Law Enforcement Range this afternoon to do some shooting and the Colt went along for a function check.

Well, she functions......no signs of over pressure or over gassing, ten rounds of Lake City M855 proved out the new barrel, BCG, and buffer and spring.

Next will be the trip to get a good zero on the irons.

Finally got around to getting this old girl finished. There's a place called U.S. Collectors Ordnance that sells 1911 and M16/A1 parts.
After a slight bit of confusion, I got the correct stock set.
Here she is in all her mismatched glory, bayonet and all.
