Mad Mike... the Flatten Flat Earth Guy ...

I do gotta hand it to him though he died trying to prove his beliefs ... even as crazy as they were.

BARSTOW, Calif. — A self-styled daredevil died Saturday after a rocket in which he launched himself crashed into the ground, a colleague and a witness said.

“Mad Mike" Hughes died after the homemade rocket crashed on private property near Barstow about 1:52 p.m. near Highway 247, the Daily Press of Victorville reported.

Waldo Stakes, a colleague who was at the rocket launch, said Hughes, 64, was killed.

In March 2018, Hughes, who believed the Earth is flat, propelled himself about 1,875 feet into the air before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert.

“My story really is incredible,” Hughes told the AP at the time. “It’s got a bunch of story lines — the garage-built thing. I’m an older guy. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, plus the Flat Earth. The problem is it brings out all the nuts also, people questioning everything. It’s the downside of all this.”

I have a shooting buddy who rides with us to matches who’s a flat earther.
No shortage of banter on the way to and from matches, no matter how far.
 
Hate it for his family, but after seeing the documentary on him, it clearly was only a matter of time.

On Prime there is a doc about this guy, I cant recall the title, but I have it in my watchlist for later.
I remember it because I read it was about a flat earther who built a rocket to get a good view lol

I mean, at least he's trying to figure stuff out. Or, well, was trying. You know, before the crash.

Seriously why does anyone care enough about this? How has anyone’s life been affected by whether or not the earth is flat or round? what was his endpoint going to be besides a big “I told you so“?

at least crazy people like the toga sneakers people think the world is going to end have a reason to get worked up about their “religion“
 
IDK, I was reading about this guy quite a lot a while ago. A friend of his claimed he went with the Flat Earth stuff because they payed him money and he was broke.

I admire him for doing what he wanted, and something quite dangerous, as we see. Let's face it: he ain't any stupider than Eval. Maybe slightly less lucky. But stupid people don't often build rockets out of scraps next to the single wide.
Building a rocket in yer backyard and launching yourself in it takes a set brass balls, imo. Of course he was well aware of the danger. More so than anybody else. Went out with a bang at least.

Don't think he really believed, IMO just in it for the publicity. He could simply take a commercial flight and get higher than any rocket he could build.

Just what do flat earthers believe is under the earth? A bunch of roots sticking out? o_O Do they believe the moon is flat too?

Because if they're lying to you about that, what else are they lying to you about? And WHY are they lying about it?

Two words that I recall from my telecom days.....

Redundant and diverse.

If he would have heeded that philosophy, he would have had a second parachute in a separate location.

So I watched the documentary on Amazon about him, Rocketman.
So he seems like a semi-intelligent guy (rocket stuff), but he's completely delusional.

It's an interesting watch, and a sad one.
This dude had very little but his rockets.
And, as I said, was very delusional.
 
OH, and in my first post in this thread I said something about a backup
From that movie, he didnt seem to like a 2nd chute for some reason.
He doesnt say why, but he's just real against it. This time it cost him his life
 
There are some things in science that are up for debate but this is not one of them.
