another glocktard trying something new (M&P 2.0)

It's funny how different things suit different people differently. I hated the trigger on the 2.0 and wasn't happy until I switched it for an Apex trigger.

Mine also suffers from early lockup release making it shoot groups of 3 inches even at 7 yards. I wasn't aware that the 2.0 could have this issue until after I bought it and I could not get good groups with it and I'm a fairly decent shot. Upon investigation I found that the barrel is free (released from lock) when the slide moves as little as an 1/8th of an inch.

Looking on the internet I found a lot of people with this same issue and S&W doesn't seem to be keen on fixing it because all of the parts are within spec. The fault occurs when your barrel and slide are both on the far end of spec.

Apex makes a replacement barrel that fixes the issue and requires slight smithing to fit but it would be another $200 dropped on a gun I really don't like to begin with.

Had mine at the range again today, so, so, so much "easier" to shoot than my G34. Some day I'm just going to have to break down and run this guy in a match and see what happens.

I got the chance to shoot a friends 2.0C yesterday. I am sold! I am a Glock 19 fanboy and carry one daily but I think that’s going to change. I shot just as well, if not better, the first time shooting the M&P as I do my G19. The ergos are fantastic and the trigger is pretty darn good right out of the box. A lot to like with the M&P 2.0C.

I finally picked one of these up last week. Should arrive at my FFL on Tuesday. I’m pretty stoked about it with all of the great things that I’ve read. I have always preferred the M&P anyway but carried a 19 for it’s size and capacity advantages.

That is unusual since the 2.0 was specifically redesigned to correct lockup variability issues with 1.0 guns.

You might find this series of posts informative, particularly the comments by Apex's Randy Lee (starting at post #23).

Good read. But it doesn’t change what mine is doing.

I put mine next to 5 other 2.0’s. With the other 5 the slide has to move to the rear almost about 3/16 before the barrel has any movement and then a full 1/4 inch before the barrel is free as it begins its cycle.

My barrel is free at 1/16 inch of slide movement and then completely free before you reach 1/8 inch.

While more rare in the 2.0 vs the 1.0 it is still a flaw that occurs when you have a slide and a barrel on opposite ends of tolerance.

Is there any fix?

I would be screaming my head off for S&W to fix the gun.

Maybe the parts are "within spec" and the problem is tolerance stacking, but I would definitely want S&W to lay hands on the gun to make absolutely sure.

And if I were you, I would also make sure that S&W knew you were a firearms website staff member - you know, to later be able to tell others how well S&W handles your issue. :D

I’ve not been to the gun store to have one of these in hand, because if I did, one would probably come home with me. Then I’d have to buy a backup, more mags, night sights, etc, etc. I don’t want to start another cycle of getting the latest gun only to come back to Glock again. I’ve been somewhat strong with that this past year and really have just bought ammo and G19 support gear. That’s been hard, with so many good 9mm pistols out lately.

I have had the FS in hand, and that texture along with the M&P ergos are great, but then the gen 5s came out and I got interested in RMRs on G19s. So, I’m sticking with G19s for now...or...

I’m sticking with Glocks, I’m sticking with Glocks, wait...I need that...

exactly. I really like my M&P, but it will never be anything but a range toy / practice gun for me. I've bought into the glock eco system too hard, too many mags/holsters/widgets that would be a pain or impossible to replicate with the M&P.

Now if I was starting over from scratch... hmm....

Since I'm NOT a firearms website staff member, I can't tell others how well S&W HASNT handled my issue. If you succeed to receive the same "priority" treatment (supervisors, senior techs, bla bla bla) on the third trip back to the factory, be prepared to be without it for more than a month and then to stop getting any info about the resolution to a gun they say can't be repaired. I've only bought 8 new Smiths this year.

Looking into the 2.0 myself. Just not chambered in any of my favorite flavors of carry caliber. Wonder if there is any conversion barrels yet. Off to Google.

Picked mine up from my FFL this afternoon. Didn’t have time to fire but 100 rounds through it before it got too dark this evening. Was shooting at steel so no real accuracy test yet but they’re coming. I was having no issues hitting 10” plates at 50 yards so I expect it to be fine for a service gun. Trigger and reset was likely the nicest of any factory M&P that I’ve felt and I have more than I care to admit. The grip texture is interesting. I like textured framed guns as I either stipple my frames or run Dawson grip tape on my competition pistols but this didn’t feel like any that I’ve felt in the past. It seemed much more aggressive but I noticed the gun still slipping a bit during recoil. Overall, it seems like a nice piece and a very welcomed addition to the M&P lineup. I’m admittedly an M&P guy and have been since I bought my very first M&P in 2012. However, I still carry a Glock 19 due to its size and capacity as I feel like it is the best of every world when it comes to an EDC handgun. I’m not a Glock fan, but I’m a fan of my Glock 19. It’s boringly reliable and I shoot it pretty well. Will the M&P take the place of my 19 in an EDC role? We will see....

One of the things that I’ve always liked about the M&P line of guns was the beaver tail. I have big, meaty hands and my grip is extremely high. The 1.0 beaver tail made slide bite nearly impossible. They have removed that on the 2.0 so it’s more like a Glock in that regard. Now the rear serrations can and will be unwarranted DNA collectors. This is disappointing for me. Not a deal breaker, but definitely not a plus.

If this becomes a common issue, maybe somebody could develop an aftermarket grip panel that includes a beaver tail.
