Anthony Bourdain, dead at 61

It has been a sad day. My heart goes out to his family and close friends.

This has really been a punch in the gut. I’m certainly no fan of celebrity, but I feel like I knew him so it’s a bitch.

Never seen his show, but knew of him.
Punk rock roots, battled with addiction, shame.
Hate it for his friends, family, and those who cared for him.

Sometimes you just never know what some people are going through.
Yesterday Kate Spade, today him.
Sad.

my wife told me about him, so i hit the internets for detail.
i clicked on a Katie Spade page, too. seems she was
obsessed with Robin Williams' suicide. maybe that's
what happened with this guy.

didnt know of her either.

i noticed several articles this week about cdc studies, increase in suicides etc - then these two names were all over the news too.

AB taught me how to cook a duck. One of his episodes of "No Reservations" (they were the best) had him hunting mallards in Arkansas. After the hunt he asked the guys how they cooked their ducks and they basically said they tried all kinds of ways but never liked them. AB then simply threw them in a hot cast iron pan with a little oil, skin side down, salt and pepper, and cooked them medium rare. Then he sliced them real thin and served them. I tried the same thing and it is still one of my favorite ways of cooking puddle ducks.

I think when he got involved with the CNN mentality (liberal gloom and doom) it got to him. I've had some close friends (and family members) kill themselves and a vast majority of them had liberal tendencies. The few conservatives that killed themselves had terminal illnesses with unimaginable pain. I just think it is a little curious. Maybe there is something to the joke about liberalism being a mental illness.

The kids are doing Tide Pods and the celebrities are doing nooses. Not sure what to make of things these days. It is odd how humans will jump on any old bandwagon.

He had a column in the NY Times before his TV show.
He certainly enjoyed drinking beer and eating.

His book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, is a classic on the goings and comings of the restaurant business. It's pretty gritty and full of tidbits on what makes a good restaurant run. After reading it I learned to avoid Sunday Brunch.

Read all his books. Checked out 2 of them from the library one time B4 heading to the beach. Rainy day books. I had read both of them by the 2nd day. The dude could cook, talk and write. He came thru Raleigh about 10 years ago on a speaking tour. Now I wish I had gone to see him but it would have cost me going to see someone like Bill Maher with my wife so that wasnt going to happen. The guy admittedly had demons that in the end he could not over come. He lived 2 lifetimes in his 61 years and will be missed.

I get that (I doubt) none of us knew him personally, but Im a bit surprised by the comments here.
Dude had some demons he couldnt let go.
I doubt it was because he leaned left or was jumping on a dang bandwagon.

I wonder if yall said the same thing when one of our own had a loved one take their life, or I guess that was different since he was 'one of us'

If you have a few minutes go to YT and punch in ABs episode of Montana and Jim Harrison. His best work. So sayeth I.

Back in the day Le Halles was a pretty good meal in its day. He has not cooked there in about 18 years. His break out into the literary world was an article in the New Yorker in 1999.

His best friend and superior chef, Eric Ripert owner and chef of Le Bernardin, was the one who found him. Sad day.

Unless he had a terminal/extremely painful demise headed his way, that was cruel and selfish as hell to do to an 11 year old daughter. She's been severely damaged.

Do tell please.

According to the book a lot of restaurants use up all of the leftovers and clean out the fridges for "Sunday brunch". Sometimes you find a lot of "casserole" type dishes on the buffets. You need to read the book. It talks about his drug problems and working in some of the bigger NYC restaurants.

Suicide is the most selfish act that a human being can do. Life is to damn short to end it just because you are not "happy". Who knows, you may be happy five, ten years down the road? Or wait 75 years and you won't have to OFF yourself. It will come naturally.

He was still a great entertainer though.

LJ once had the opportunity to attend a gathering of chefs in CO and Anthony was one of them. Meeting him and Jacques Peppin was the highlight of the trip for her. She spent about 3 days in Aspen rubbing elbo's with some of the top rated chefs and sampling their food.
It has, so far been a high point in her life and when she heard about Anthony she cried for him, and I didn't try to stop her...

Jacques Peppin is one of my culinary heroes. Everyone who cooks should own a copy of La Technique.

If it was said, it wasn't publicly.

I have lost two very close friends to suicide and understand the pain it brings to the people left behind. That said depression can strike with no rhyme or reason . Unless you have experienced first hand or had a loved one struggle with it there is no way you can understand how soul sucking true depression is. It is not a question of being "happy" but having an overwhelming sense of hopelessness that is hell on earth.
