Anybody prepping for the storms in the Atlantic?

Doesn't seem to be anything more than some standard t-storms and rain at my place. Maybe
I don't know if you go Fran'd in '96. We were living between Ral & Knightdale, no water for seven days, no power for 14, my neighbor's home across the street had several trees go to the ground through their 2 story home with an attic, all five of them were in it. We ran chainsaws two weeks non stop digging out neighbors. Since then I won't have a large tree closer than 90' from the house. The best part was the bond that was built with the neighbors. https://www.weather.gov/ilm/HurricaneFran

Yep. Hurricanes and ice storms are great proving grounds for your preps.

Hugo hit us pretty hard. No power for 21 days, no water, etc, and trees down all through our neighborhood. Ive also went through the couple ice storms we've had here. I have a neighbor behind me that has some pretty big trees in his back yard (which backs up to mine), that kinda worries me, but not much i can do about that. I checked the generator last week, and ill grab some more gas this week. Chainsaw is gtg, and my camper is always ready. Food and water is always up to par. I learned long time ago to always be ready, cause you just never know. Hugo taught me that.

I have large water oak beside the house that I should have already had limbed or took down this is the one thing that concerns me most.

Just ordered a couple boxes of chemlights on Amazon. I think we are about as ready as we are going to be.

have a couple trees in my backyard that are suspect, I will be interested to seeing if they survive the storm, should thehave a come through as predicted.

Ignorant question here....Hugo happened when I was 2 years old; haven't had the need to prep for a big storm since I've been old enough to worry about one. How does one connect a generator to power their home? I have unfortunately grown up in a time where life skills are not taught by public schools, and my father practically killed himself driving a truck to provide for our family when I was young (was lucky to see him more than 5 days a month as a youth). While I can assemble, disassemble and diagnose most electronic devices, perform maintenance on most motor vehicles (can perform pm on a semi and clean a refer unit like a champ--ever had to clean 20 pallets of ruined chicken out of a failed refrigerated trailer in July?), and handle most basic electrical needs (installing appliances, replacing fixtures) there are many things I never took the opportunity to learn; and this seems like a pretty standard one.

Probably not the right way, but I added a plug to the side of the house, then ran wire into the breaker box and to a double pole 30a breaker. I flip the main off, then other breakers I don’t want to power. Then I crank the generator and go inside and flip its breaker on.

I checked my chemlight stash; apparently my wife has been raiding it for my son to use.

I am going to head out tomorrow and snag some

Irma didn’t get close to us last year and we still got 60mph winds and tornado spin offs. Lost three trees in the yard. Even if you don’t take a direct hit, wind gusts can drop trees and power lines for days at a time

Good deals on Amazon, some are same day ship.

When Hurricane Fran came through it was less wind and rain than they are predicting this one given a Wilmington landfall. some places were without power for a month, and there were trees that were blocking roads for almost as long.

The *right* way to do it is with a transfer switch. I went cheap and bought a small noise and fume generator from Hazard Frought Tools and just use extension cords to power essentials like the fridge and TV. Power may go out but cable almost never does :)

Another dumb question. Why chem lights?would battery powered lantern not be better options

Act as nightlights for the bathroom, etc. That way I don't need to have something on with a battery all night. it's amazing how utterly dark it is in a house at night when there's zero ambient light, like from the digital clock on a coffee maker or a stove or something like that

If I buy them online I don’t get to say I found bullets or other reloading gear on sale

Rechargeable toilet light. Has light sensor and clips over side of the John.

Got one of these on primeday for like $4. It actually lights up the whole bathroom well. And it changes colors. The kids love it.

That is very cool. I had no idea such an animal existed. I would I would like to have something like that as a target when I get drunk.

Rechargeable 16-Color Toilet Night Light with IP67 Waterproof Design, Motion Sensor LED Toilet Bowl Light, 5 Stage Dimmer, Motion Detection, Long Lasting - By Witshine https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075S9WZK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nYNLBbH1JVW08

They have a few different ones. We went with the light sensor instead of the motion sensor. But a single charge seems to cover it for about a month or so. Also. Ignore the surfer hair on the little guy. Wife informed me I would have no bait and tackle left if she came home and he had a haircut. And I believe her. She’s a better shot than me....but I’m faster on the draw. Not sure I should chance it.

Funny that you mention this because it reminds me of Hugo. At the time, the switch for the cell phone company, Centel, was across the street from a big KFC. While this was normally convenient, they were shut down for weeks due to lack of power. It took a couple weeks for them to get around to cleaning the place out, which mostly involved taking a ton of spoiled chicken out of the freezer and dumping it in the parking lot where it baked for about a week. It was a rough week for the guys.

As it turns out...yes, I'm prepping.

I may be going out to sea as early as Monday on the CVN-77.

This remains to be seen on the details, however.

(It's for an engineering inspection.)

Like as in this one. LOL

I took this picture three weeks ago as she was headed out of port.

PS nice office you have there.

IF you have any ChemLights left when Halloween rolls around a funny thing to do it take an opaque jug, stick a radioactive symbol on it and then cut a couple ChemLight stick open and pour the contents into the jug. Put on a Tyvek suit and respirator and you got a costume that will make some people real nervous :D

I hope they’re wrong. When the eastern parts of NC mad SC flooded last it took months and months to clean up. Kinda like the tornado in Greensboro, 5 months later and there’s still a mess
There are still towns that have not been given the monies the .gov promised to clean up and fix the damage from the floods.

Yep. That's the one.

Looks like they're heading out to sea today and us shipyard engineer types will be flying out to her next Monday for our inspection, after the hurricane has pretty much passed.

We'll see.

My first major hurricane experience was a nightmare.

Not because of the hurricane and the damage, per se, though that was impressive.

I spent the night on duty aboard the USS Henry Clay (SSBN-625) tied up at Wharf Alpha at the Naval Weapons Station, Goose Creek, SC when Hugo came through.

My (now) ex-wife spent her time up in Norfolk, VA getting banged by her boyfriend so she could get pregnant and sink her hooks into him ('cause the 3rd child which she had told him was his was actually mine, and she had to do something to keep her next source of income secure). All this while causing me no end to the legal nightmare she was spinning for me with the Navy, because the flip side of her plan was to make ME out to be the bad guy so people wouldn't look at her like the lying, cheating, c*m-guzzling, dog-f*cking, snake-swallowing, sl*t-b*tch from Hell that she was.

If it hadn't been for all that (and the collateral damage I spent years dealing with afterwards), dealing with the weeks without power, downed trees blocking streets everywhere, flood damage all over the place, houses crushed by fallen trees, scarce food/water resources, etc. wouldn't have been too bad.

If there's an interlock on there that's a legal way to do it.

Throw one bottle in as a test right now?

I have not had any burst when putting new water bottles into the freezer.

You can always put the package of water inside a trash bag just in case.
Cross linked polyethylene stretches quite well.

Just like in Back To The Future! I need more Plutonium Marty!

IMG_20180910_173933.jpg Well, we finally made it to Oak Island and sat on the beach for about an hour or two. Can't get a room anywhere so we went to dinner at Island Way and now we're at some friends in St. Pauls. So much for my vacation.

Ive got the feeling we'll be living in a 45' shipping container for the next month.

I'm adding another 150 gallons of water by changing over some pickle barrels that we use for feed. Will be clean enough to either filter or use for washing. My well pump shed is vulnerable so more cant hurt.

Closest neighbor with small kids is bugging at noon today, they came over last night and handed me the house key and gave me permission to use whatever I need in exchange for fridge and freezer clean out, possible salvage/damage control and security. Lots of useful stuff over there, food, water, gas, booze, brand new in box 5500kw gen, big 4wd quad and a protected well pump head, this is a huge prep score.

Everyone in my immediate area has checked in, nobody besides the above is bugging. We got plans, lots of big tractors and chainsaws, so hopefully enough equipment survives so we can get to work cutting our way out to the public road, or farther.
