Anybody prepping for the storms in the Atlantic?

Probably a stupid question, but can I leave play sand in the bags and use them that way?

Not a stupid question.

If the play sand is in paper bags, then the bags will be likely to fall apart when wet.

They MAY last one use...but they may not. This depends on what stresses they're subject to. Wind driven rains can damage/tear the paper sacks, and once an opening is made, the sand will rapidly wash out with the water.

Guys, don’t forget with the storm flooding can occur. If you have flooding remember that you could see an increase in snakes ... poisonous and no poisonous. If you have to mess in an area you think could even possibly have a snake in (underbrush, fallen tree limbs, storm debris, etc) ... wear boots or even makeshift snake gaiters (wrap a 18” piece of tarp around each leg 4 or 5 times). Also make vibrations and such stomping and banging before you get to close to let ‘em know you’re coming and most likely they’ll leave.

Does filling my gas tank and gas can count? Haha

I guess I should also ensure my generator starts easily, prob need to clean the carb.

I don’t understand the people buying bottled water. Is your water already contaminated? Start filling nalgenes. Fill your bath tub. Fill 5gal buckets.

I bought 3 bottles of scotch, 12 1 dozen packs of slim jims, a case of devil dogs, 5 packs of handiwipes, a yeti full of ice cubes 2 cartons of cigarettes and cigars, 4 lighters, a wind driven battery charger for the ipod and some Critical Defense ammo for my 30 carbine.

These are actually plastic bags

They can't drink tap water!

A lot can still change, but she's heading south now. SC is lining up a direct hit after thinking they were in the clear...

Please post a link. The path hasn't changed at Noaa in a day as far as where landfall is.

I've been following the storm on American weather at this link...
https://www.americanwx.com/bb/topic/51526-major-hurricane-florence-storm-mode-thread/?page=14

They're a bunch of pro and weather hobbyists that track these storms very closely. The thread started as hitting the carolina border then shifted north. Within the past 12 hours, they're shifting the storm landfall towards Charleston again.

Here's the latest modeling. Note the new southbound turns. These are new to the models. NOTHING is guaranteed and landfall could be anywhere along the coast. The southern shift also moves the rain towards the triad and away from the triangle.

I am not a meteorologist.
I am not a layer.
I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I'm simply reading threads and sharing info. Florence may land wherever she chooses at this point.

We stay prepared so I don’t have to go get in a fight over the last loaf of bread but I decided to make some hurricane carnitas in the slow cooker tonight. Figured they’d be awesome even if we lose power and it’s several days worth of food.

So I stopped at the bi-rite on the way home for a butt and a couple other ingredients. Absolute madhouse. The police had just left after a fight in the parking lot over bottled water, not a slice of bread on the shelf, parking lot was jammed.

But I made it in and out in 15 minutes and the aroma of cooking pork is already filling the house.

Yep, people are nuts. When I was at the store yesterday morning I watched people driving their carts like it was a race or bumper car. People were even driving more agrressively. A-holes every where. When people lose it 5 days before a storm it is easy to understand how things go totally off kilter when the storm has hit and they have to deal with an ugly aftermath.

And I don't get the bread thing. That crap goes bad fairly quickly. I am loaded up with tortillas. Those things last forever after being opened.

People devolve to a lower level of self when they're threatened or heavily stressed. I see it at work, stores, etc. Black Friday isn't too far off from last minute storm shoppers...maybe even the same folks?

15min, a little carb cleaner, and a rag and my old 2100w Craftsman generator fired right up with a 3/4 pull. I’m all good.

Got the generator running, have some water stored, some regular food, and some MREs.
Gas is getting scarce around here - lots of stations empty. The one closest to my house had fuel on my way home, but had to wait in line and pumps were very slow. Then went out after 7 to fill up fuel cans at a different station and same issue.
Need to sharpen chainsaw chains and tie down a few more things outside tomorrow, and that's about all I can do.

Model I just watched showed it hitting just north of Charleston, on Sunday evening, then heading up towards Charlotte.

Seeing gas stations out of fuel...
topped off Monday/yesterday, good for 330 more miles, as it is. I'll try to buy more, if I see any, tomorrow.
I heard people at work saying that the stores were nuts on Monday too

oh and my prep news for the day: SIG sent me a shipping notice that my 'voluntarily' upgraded P320 should be arriving via FedEx on Thursday. Yay, its only taken 7 weeks to swap a trigger module....

Definitely want to top off a few extra magazines.... just in case. I'll have a few more with me everywhere I go.

Gas stations last night were getting bad, or at least the one I found that still had gas.

We're always ready for catastrophe to strike. So, this storm only called for topping off the beer. Then my big brother called yesterday morning "Mandatory Evac in Craven county, and I have a broken foot ... I need your help!"
So, when family calls, I drop everything and haul butt down I-40 and 70 East to Havelock. I didn't spare any ponies on the ride down there. I wanted to get him loaded and back on the road asap.

We loaded up my dump truck, hooked his trailer to the back, hooked his boat to his truck, put the dogs in the car with my nephew, and joined the mass exodus. The traffic was heavy and slow around Kinston and such. But, it some places we could do the speed limit. Six and a half hours later we pulled into my driveway.

So, now it looks like we brought all of his stuff 250 miles to be right in the path of the storm! Oh well!

It surprised me how courteous most drivers were. No accidents that we saw, even with the roads at capacity. Also didn't see anybody pulled for speeding in either direction. Diesel fuel was selling for $3.39/gal. All gas stations had lines at the pumps. I brought enough fuel for my round trip, just in case.

Just got back from SeaLevel with my boat, emptied the freezer and what I could take from the refrigerator. Picked up everything off the floor that I could.
Left at 5 am this morning, and had no problem with traffic all the way back to SE Greensboro. Hope we have something to go back to after the storm.

We drove home from St. Pauls today, got the generator started and topped off. I found my chainsaw, filled it and got it running, got 2 new batteries for the truck, and picked up a bottle of Captain Morgan special reserve and a 1/2 gallon of Gentleman Jack. My preps are done.
