Anybody prepping for the storms in the Atlantic?

I have seen a few rather expensive generators for sale on facebook. Some new in box. Real humanitarians.

I don’t mean anything bad by this statement I just have never understood the problem that some people (ok a lot of people) have with “price gouging”.

Nobody bats and eye when a tickle me Elmo sells for $2000 because someone didn’t buy one early enough for their kid but someone fails to prepare ahead of time gets charged double for an item they should have bought months ago and everyone loses their minds.

We’re either a free market or we aren’t. Free markets are controlled by supply and demand. If a friend needed a generator I’d loan him one. If a stranger wanted to buy one of mine he’d pay through the nose.

Went to WM tonight (around 8) after I got off work.

Madhouse. No milk, no water, no bread...Clemmons; not New Bern, Richlands or Burgaw, but Clemmons.

If ever SHTF in a major way, things are going to get real ugly, real quick.

I've had my Genny for about 15 years, I would like to have a whole house generator but this one has more than paid for itself, especially in the winter. We have gas heat so I only need enough juice to power the fan motor. The wife complains if I start the work stove up, melting all the candles and having to walk around the house naked and all.

Chances are if you are over the age of 30 nobody wants to see you naked. Your wife my lie about that, but that's why she's your wife.

My wife told me they were closing Walmart at 4pm. Not sure if she meant today or Thursday. I had to pick up some milk this morning (and yes I have a generator) and went to Food Lion and they had plenty of water and bread.

I am a big believer in the free market and I am sure these people will get what they are asking. It is just not something I could do, or a practice I would ever reward.

Heard stories of fights because people were taking cases of water out of others peoples carts when they turned their backs. Gas, water and the usual provisions ran out fast around here in Mocksville.

This storm helped me realize that :
1) I’m not as prepared for crap like I thought I was
2) never underestimate people’s greed to make a buck off your misfortune
3) it’s scary how fast “civil” people regress to an earlier form of man in bad situations

Got plenty of wine, food and liquor. If anyone needs something around here that I can help let me know.

Ive not stopped at a grocery store since Sunday, seeing, pretty much, all regular unleaded sold out around the Triad (at least the places Ive traveled the past couple days)

Riding it out in Conway S.C. about a 1/2 mile from my good friend Billy at Battery Oaks. Just finished frying couple pieces of flounder and grouper with fries and slaw, also had a glass of red wine. Going to buckle down and hope storm passes fast.

What's the deal with water for crying out loud?!

You have municipal water, you're okay. You're on a well, fill some containers before power goes.
What's the problem? People are too stupid anymore.

Or they could go overboard, like me...
We're on county water, which went out after Matthew. Didn't come back for a week.
This go round my eldest daughter and her girls are staying with us so I figured near to 450 gallons should see us through.
Thanks @thrillhill [emoji3]

Flooding. If it washes out a road it can take the water main with it.

Flooding during Matthew took out the water plant in Lumberton. We were without our city water for a week..... without being "ready" and having plenty of drinking water on hand, we would've been screwed. I'll not depend on any government, city, or municipality to supply me and mine with the things needed to sustain ourselves.

SPOT. ON.
Folks had, at a minimum, a full week to get their collective shit together...imagine if they only had 24-48hrs (or less) and the utter chaos that would be unleashed.

I agree 100%, Free market. Giving and low prices should come from the heart, not forced by government.

My personal beliefs. I’ll give what I can to those in need. I gave my old Coleman 5000w 10hp to be used yesterday. Could have easily sold it for more than it’s worth, as I don’t need it at all. I’ve got a harbor freight predator 6500 13hp, and my father who stays with me during these storms has a Duramax 12000w 18hp that’s duel fuel, propane and gas. We’ve got 20 gallons of gas and 3 25 lb tanks on hand, that’s enough for a few days. If nothing else is good there, the one good thing that harbor freight sales is those predator engines, they are a decent deal. I bought that one generator at 381 dollars, because it was an out of the box price.

I think by next year I’m going to invest in a propane backup tied in to the breakerbox with 100lb tank, just as a dedicated home backup. The ones we have now we work with when needed.

Haven't municipal water supplies been contaminated during flooding? I seem to remember people being told boil water or only use bottles water during other major hurricanes and flooding events.

Sure, I understand that. My comment was indtended to shine light on those who don't seem to know how to prepare.

I got a loaf of bread at Aldi in Harrisburg without having to resort to fisticuffs or displaying my carry weapon. But....I will have to continue to drink my filtered well water because thy had nothing but 'spring water' yech

popped into the WS home depot today - they had over a dozen generators in stock, in case anyone around here is looking for one

Im going whole hse genny as soon as possible...which probably now means 6 months. I should have done it 6 months ago when i was getting quotes but now they come with IoT.

Yup being a prepper comes in handy. I've got extension cords run to three of my neighbors to keep their fridge and freezers up. One is none and two is one.

I live in the Burg. It’s changed a lot over the years.

I have picked them up here and there. I used to travel regionally and got the first two from a guy in Beulahville, along with a 55 gal pickle drum and 10 5 gal buckets w/lids.
Third one I bartered with Thrillhill here on the forum.
Sometimes they can be found for around $100- $125 on Craigslist, but be certain of what they had in them before.
#3 had bakers mole asses, so it's the designated drinking water.
#2 for flushing, but we drank out it after Matthew and didn't die or grow another limb.
#1 is on standby duty at the barn.

My daughter and SIL live in an apartment on west Friendly on the 1st floor. The back door is at the bottom of the hill so she was worried about flooding coming into the apartment. I was out at Lowe's tonight at 9:30 getting 50# bags of sand to help with the water. 16 bags later I think they should be okay. If not they can head to the in-laws place. They just bought a12kw Genny and are closer to work. If our son and his family lose power they will come here.
