I want to reach out 300 to 400 yards with a 204 Ruger but the problem that I have is the targets are steel and unless they are freshly painted it is hard to see hits. Even with new paint, the hits are hard to see. Traveling close 4,000 ft/sec it is hard to see the impact. Thinking about putting paper targets out there but a 20 cal hole at 400 yards is also hard to see. I have some 1 gallon water jugs that I will be playing around with when I am at the range by myself.
If you are shooting a 204, what distance are you shooting and what targets are you using?

Best option is to invest in a quality spotting scope. A fixed 35x will serve you a long, long time.

Next, buy some quality spray paint and go white, then safety orange, then white.

Lastly, on paper at distance go black circles that are at least 3moa at distance. Then buy small white and black pasters.

Shoot a group, go down range paste up bullet holes white.

When back on the gun you can now see the current group and adjust.

Shoot the next group, go down range paste over the old group with black pasters, new holes white

Great idea about white, safety orange then white paint. I have a good spotting scope but have to get off the rifle/bench and stand up to look through the spotting scope.

You need a manfrotto tripod and head. Love mine, had it for 8+ years now. Best investment ever at $350

I have a rifle in 204 Ruger and it is a great little shooter. Was shooting at catfish ponds until my friend who managed them retired. The ponds (12 of them) were roughly 200 yards wide and 300 yards long and the targets were blue herons that stood in the ponds and ate fish all day long. Think something the size of your hat at 300+ yards cause most of the time they wouldn't let you get on the same side or same end of the pond as they were so you had to shoot all the way across and all the way down the length of the ponds too. Oh and you don't have any trouble telling when you have a hit. LOL
Here is a picture of one.
