I have hit a lull in my desire to shoot recently. I normally shoot at least once a week but theses days it seems like I just am not in the mood. I am still shooting enough to keep my skills but I am not “enjoying” it as much as I normally do.

Anyone else run into these lulls.

I get them sometimes. Mainly due to the effort I have to put into shooting. I don’t belong to a range, and the closest on I could/should join is PHA which is 45 minutes away. I have plenty of friends that are members, and go when invited (when I can). But it’s three kids, a full time job, youth pastor, president of the board at a local non-profit day care, and whatever else life tosses in, I just strain to find time.

In short, I have to work hard to get to the range to begin with, so I get tired of having to try.

I think the thing that keeps me jacked up about shooting is shooting on the clock once a week. That drives my interest in getting to the range an additional day a week because I see the results come match day.

Is all of your shooting at "the range"? If so, try getting into some competitions. You don't need to be an athlete or super competitive to enjoy an IDPA, 3 Gun, etc. match. If all I had was time at a bench on a square range, I'd get bored awfully fast as well.

Yes. Having a goal to work towards helps. Some task that is measurable whether it be working up reloads for accuracy or simply working on skills but in a measurable way. Also getting involved in competitive shooting is a lot of fun and the relationships you form with your partners in crime will keep you coming back.

I shoot a few informal matches here and there. I am not really a competition guy. I hate the standing around all day to do such a small amount of actual shooting. I might look into it again. It might be enough to get my juices flowing.

I used to belong to a range that when I went on a weekday I had free run of the place. I could shoot on the move, multiple targets, rifle and pistol transitions etc...

Since I moved I do end up shooting on a square range more often than not. Maybe I just miss my old range. LOL So far lots of good input. Thanks and keep it coming.

To add - TIME. I dont have enough time to get burned out.
So money and time prevent me from getting burned out on it.

That couldn't hurt.

:D

Honestly I have to not buy something for a bit. I have a 1911 at Don Williams for some custom work and have a BHP at Hierloom Percision for Mr Yost to do his magic.

They won’t be done for a bit but need to save the fun money to pay those off when they are done.

What have you got nice that I might want?

You know, so I don't get burned out. :)

I bore easily like 5 year old. This is why I shoot less pistol indoors. The rain this tear has made it impossible to get on the property to shoot rifles which I desire more. Even a big tractor got stuck to the axel where me and tin man shoot. I’m not about to lug all our gear 400 yards across the hayfield to shoot. Doing the same shooting to me if boring.

I lose interest after every deer season. Have to go find where I wrote down the safe combination most every fall. Haven’t even shot a pistol since the last time the ammo shelves were bare. Kinda put me in a stockpile mode and I’ve yet to bring myself to “waste” any of my stash.

Did you ever buy a BHP? I have a few of those lying around the house. LOL

I was actually looking at them very recently, and noticed I have never ever seen one with a magwell, and I need a magwell, and happy to install one to run it on the clock, but if there aren't any magwells for BHP, then I can't run it on the clock and it'll just sit in the safe, so I never did buy one.

Which is sad, but that is how pistols get judged in my little universe.

Here too, I have a range in my yard and I still only shoot every couple of months. BTDT, trying to find something new to motivate me to get up in the morning.

Above is my friend joining me in my backyard range.

I shoot alone practicing drills for competitions.

I shoot my IDPA targets but I also shoot steel.

In addition, I mix it up amongst different pistols. Use a range timer and also shoot suppressed.

I can see how it can get monotonous shooting at a piece of paper. I used to go to indoor ranges but I belong to a club, as well as shoot at home.

I’ll even mix it up with longer distances with different rifles. I use different targets or just practice on technique.

The key is setting up different goals and objectives to work upon. We all can show improvement.

CZ SP-01 two shots, 10 yards, 147 gr Speer Lawman:

My friend brought his cans for me to try out. I only took out 2. He has ten.

So mixing it up is fun. Try different platforms, different calibers, different targets, different distances, and work from shooting from various positions. That’s all I do to stay interested.

Right now, it’s too dark after work so I’m frustrated since I can’t shoot after dark. Though I should practice with a light and my suppressors on cardboard. I don’t want neighbors freaking out on me.

I don’t have a home range. I wish I did. If I had the room I would set one up. Changing it up, with lots of different targets and target types would be awesome!

You have no excuses now... get one and send it to your smith of choice and get it on the clock.

Do you have access to an outdoor range? I’d lug around 2 or 3 targets with me.

I even brought small targets like golf balls or bowling pins. I’d shoot them with my Ruger Mark pistol or one of my 1911s (Ed brown, Wilson, Coonan, etc).

Of all targets, I enjoy the Dueling tree.

Target stand targets by Arntzen are solid.

The Last Stands target system is solid but it’s hard to disassemble when it’s 32F or below.

No....I don’t believe I could ever get bored of shooting.

Nope. On average i shoot every other day. Due to extraordinary family crisis, i havent shot, smoked a cigar or had a drink in a week and i am all effed up. I just came from a bar and guess where i am going tomorrow morning. Oh yes, 2 guns won on gunbroker waiting for me at LGS.

Hope your family crisis gets figured out without too much pain/stress/whatever else.
And go have some ballistic therapy!

Got burned out shooting matches at Butner. Last couple years I went I didn't even turn in a score card. I took 5 or 6 rifles and tested loads and had a blast. No pressure to compete and I found a lot of great loads just screwing around.

Interested in babysitting a toddler and infant while I go shoot? :D

Like a few others, I don't have enough free time to shoot as much as I'd like. Wish I had a range in my backyard, maybe one day.

That what I was about to suggest. Until I can bust every skeet thrown and out shoot John wick I'll still be interested.

I shoot alone, wife and two daughters have no interest and my neighbors are not gun people.
I try to visit the indoor range twice a month and the outdoor range once a month.
Always room for improvement, nobody knows how bad I shoot.;)

Hey, I've seen you shoot! With even my "puny" little guns! You don't shoot "bad"...
And I'm sorry the wife and the girls aren't interested in shooting, but that could change.
And if you get really bored, you can always come to Jim's with me!! It's perfect weather in there these days!
