Anyone else ever get burned out on shooting?

I get them sometimes. Mainly due to the effort I have to put into shooting. I don’t belong to a range, and the closest on I could/should join is PHA which is 45 minutes away. I have plenty of friends that are members, and go when invited (when I can). But it’s three kids, a full time job, youth pastor, president of the board at a local non-profit day care, and whatever else life tosses in, I just strain to find time.

In short, I have to work hard to get to the range to begin with, so I get tired of having to try.

I feel exactly the same way. I don't think I get tired of shooting, I get tired of having to put so much effort into making it happen.

I’ve been temporarily not in the mood to go to the range but I don’t have enough money or time to get burned out on shooting.

Above is my friend joining me in my backyard range.

I shoot alone practicing drills for competitions.

I shoot my IDPA targets but I also shoot steel.

In addition, I mix it up amongst different pistols. Use a range timer and also shoot suppressed.

I can see how it can get monotonous shooting at a piece of paper. I used to go to indoor ranges but I belong to a club, as well as shoot at home.

I’ll even mix it up with longer distances with different rifles. I use different targets or just practice on technique.

The key is setting up different goals and objectives to work upon. We all can show improvement.

My friend brought his cans for me to try out. I only took out 2. He has ten.

So mixing it up is fun. Try different platforms, different calibers, different targets, different distances, and work from shooting from various positions. That’s all I do to stay interested.

Right now, it’s too dark after work so I’m frustrated since I can’t shoot after dark. Though I should practice with a light and my suppressors on cardboard. I don’t want neighbors freaking out on me.

Stop showing us pics of your home range. We who don't have them are starting to hate you ;)

I'm finally coming off my third burnout, first it was competitive trap and handgun (late 60's until early 80's) then it was competitive skeet and handgun (early 80' to today) and currently I'm shooting sporting clay's and scoped rimfire handguns.

I still enjoy the range and the general shooting but haven't felt the competitive urge as much in the past several years. I stopped collecting trophies years ago and trashed all but the few that were truly special to me for various reasons. Having competed in numerous disciplines for the past 51 years has been fun but it's worn thin so I no longer participate at that level. I can say without fear of contradiction that shooting competitively will take a lot of the fun out of the sport....

I got into competitive bass fishing when I lived in CA. It took a lot of what makes fishing special away. So I dialed it back and just fished when, where and how I wanted. So now when I fish if I want to throw that gargantuan rip bait all day and target one huge fish I do. If I want to learn a new technique and suffer through it for a day or two so be it. I've seen lots of people turn their hobby into a career and become miserable.

Until my daughter’s got interested, I would burn out. Now I just enjoy taking them to FLD and watching them shoot, which makes me want to shoot. Maybe try introducing new shooters to the sport? That may get you out of your slump

Not really burned out. But haven’t shot or even touched my reloading gear once this year. I blame it on the fiancé moving in. She keeps me busy doing repairs and projects around the house.

It’s actually a good thing overall as I needed to do these projects but it takes all my time away from the reloading room. I don’t ever just spend all day tinkering on loads anymore, much less try to fit in time to go shoot for fun. Have a new barrel that’s being picky and haven’t even begun to work up loads specifically for it because it was, work up loads, test loads, come back, check data, narrow parameters, retest. Now it’s a hassle to find the time to load in the first place:( much less actually go to a range...

I'm too new to it and still taking lessons and occasionally shooting with friends, so I'll check back with you in about 50 years! Lol.
Maybe you need to take a newbie out to the range for some friendly shooting?
In any case, I hope your zest for shooting comes back to you soon!

I come and go. Kind of like phases. Luckily I can shoot in the backyard and every once in a while, when I do not think I am into it. I will decide to run a few rounds through something or sight a gun in, and then I am all about it again. So yea, I have a lot of other hobbies, so sometimes it is not the top of the list.

I shoot Everyday. Have for many years. My goal at age 71 is to maintain. It is difficult. I have with witnesses from this forum drawn from concealment and hit my target in .39 seconds. It is a bitter pill to swallow, but I can no longer do that. I am now a .50 shooter and trying to hold on to that.
I never tire of shooting it is a part of discipline in my life. I missed 2 days of school from the 1st grade until I Graduated High School. My Mother was Not seeing to it that I learned 2 and 2 was 4. She was teaching me to get up, put your clothes on, you have somewhere to be.
My shooting is the same. Every day I have some where to be. Her system worked and is still working. I am the weak link in the system. I Will get slower but it won't be from not trying to maintain.
Shooting is not my sport of choice. It is not my pass time. It is a way of life. My duty is to try to have as many people that I can touch come to this way of life and know that your safety is on you. As long as I am alive, everything here will be free to all to enjoy shooting.
Within the last hour My dear friend of 30 years, wife called. She wants me to inventory all his firearms and Randall Knives to prepare to sell. We were loosing him daily to Alsheimer's , now he has had a stroke.
I would give anything if he could join me today, as he has so many times. That is over. Soon this may be you. It of course will find me. Now in months not years.
If shooting starts to bore you or you are burned out find something that sets you on fire again.
Remember the Battery Oaks mantra.....Die with memories..not dreams.
Sorry, but my friend is on my mind.

I'm sorry about your friend! Very sad.
And are you saying I have months and not years to come down there and shoot???

Millie, I hope we both have years. And of course at my age I know time is fleeting. As always you are welcome here anytime.

Well, you scared me a little!
You might see me in the next couple of months, if you shoot all year. It's nice that you invite people to come shoot at your place.
And my lessons are going really well, so you won't have to worry about getting shot....by me, at least!

I laid shooting/reloading down from age 25 until 46. I didn't shoot much of nothing. No reloading either. I came back as the political winds were blowing for the 2008 election season.

It's been too long since I was in a rifle range proper.

The one good thing is I can shoot at my parents house. We've been pumping lead in that pile of stumps for 40 plus years.

A couple of years ago my brother and I met up at home place and had an afternoon shoot. Dad joined in too. On the the next visit mom pulled me aside and chidded me for bringing my dad's shooting monster back out of the box. Mom said she had thought he was finished with shooting but my brother and I woke it back up.

Y'all have a good one.

Thanks, it's come a long way from the 5 acres of kudzu, saw briars and scrub pines it was when I bought it.

I actually did enjoy the time I spent clearing that by hand.

I can understand that. You did a nice job too! Congrats on the enjoyment it must bring you.

I lose interest after every deer season. Have to go find where I wrote down the safe combination most every fall. Haven’t even shot a pistol since the last time the ammo shelves were bare. Kinda put me in a stockpile mode and I’ve yet to bring myself to “waste” any of my stash.
My range property is my deer property, so I can't shoot out there from September - December. About now, I get tired of deer season and am looking forward to shooting again. But then it will warm up, and it's time to get out the fishing kayak. And the camper. Come June, SCUBA gear. Why is the best coastal fishing during deer season? Then I run out of deer meat, and start filling the feeders, checking the stands, and cutting shooting lanes. I love being outdoors in the Carolinas.

Last time i went to the range and did any significant shooting was July. Ive made a few quick trips since thing but only to sight stuff in.

Part of my problem is I'm working 6 days a week and by the time Sundays rolled around I've got a pile of house work and errands to run.
Ive even joined CCGC and haven't been other than for the orientation meeting.

When that happens I typically take up a new/different shooting discipline....Rimfire target, Rimfire Long Range, Shotgun Clays, Vintage Military Rifle matches, reloading new calibers, etc.

It can happen with any “sport”, sometimes you just need a break.
And this is not a bad thing. The way we process learning, we can actually improve if we take a break.

I get burned out and need to take a break. With everything.

My true love has always been 3gun, so with 3 totally different guns its harder to burn out on all three. Lots to work on!

When I was in the mil I would definitely get burned out, especially during work-up packages. But after I got out and could shoot on my terms on my time, not so much burnout. But when I shoot I need a plan.

I wish I had the money to get tired of shooting.

I get the pistols out and burn some ammo since it is the second cheapest round I own.

Besides that, the other most I shoot is when I do load development.

I got slightly burned out on Glocks a few months ago, so I bought a 1911 and a Beretta M9a3. I’ve been shooting those exclusively lately. I took my 19x and one of my RMR’d G19s out this afternoon, and after tearing out the center of my targets, I am now wondering why I have a 1911 and a Beretta.

I don’t think I’ll ever not enjoy shooting.
