So Ive seen pictures where people will take a piece of wood (slab) and put it into resin, so all of the nooks and crannies are filled and smooth, then making that big piece a tabletop or something.

I had a SIMILAR idea, but never messed with that stuff before and was curious how difficult it was to work with

What was that pour-on epoxy stuff we used to use to put a thick coating on bar tops, can’t remember the brand. That stuff went on so thickyou could embed coins in it.

For a table top I wouldn’t dunk anything, just fill with colored epoxy then plane, scrape or sand it to the finish you want. Epoxy gets tacky if you heat it, so some care is required when sanding.

I have a random piece of wood, its about 1/4 oval shaped. Id like to make a rectangular piece out of it for a small shelf in the garage.
I think i'll need to build a wood frame, maybe line it with wax paper or something that it wont stick to (?), and then place the wood in, pour whatever into, and wait.

I'll look on youtube a bit

@JimB if you think of what youve used, please let me know, thanks

It's not hard, it's just tedious and messy. You'll get it all over the place, and there is a LOT of sanding and polishing required to get a nice finish. If that sounds like fun to you, go for it!

What are the measurements of the piece of wood and finished shelf? Are you wanting a piece of wood suspended in clear acrylic?

Take a look at this stuff and similar https://www.klockit.com/kraftkote-clear-polymer-resin.html

Ideally it'd be only partially suspended in clear acrylic, and about 1/3 of the shelf would be acrylic.

I'll need to measure it again, but Im going to guess it's 8"x16", about 1.5" thick

Epoxy is going to be your best bet. The slow cure time means air bubbles can mostly work themselves out. I'm a big fan of Royal Palm resin for epoxy. Good strength, good clarity, easy mix ratios. The thin version is likely your best bet. Will adhere to the wood well... You're going to need to build a form with walls the resin won't stick to. Do some searching for "river tables" to get some ideas.

Lots of videos on You Tube about this very thing some using different additives to color and enhance cracks and groves.

Make sure you use epoxy that has UV protection, else all is for nothing in a short time exposed to sunlight.

ok, but epoxy breaks down, doesn't just change color. It will fall off.
A good quality one is likely to last longer than what he'll need it for. :) I primarily use urethane based resins personally. Used up around 300 lbs so far this year and it's not even February yet lol

Well it'll be in the garage, on the back wall, so not a ton of sunlight (none directly) will be on it
