First let me apologize if this is the wrong spot to post this, but here in the next month or two I’ll be wanting to purchase either a half or whole steer and would prefer to get grass fed/finished. Does anyone have recommendations for farmers/businesses for that? I’m in Pitt county but willing to drive a bit and will be a cash buyer.

Although I think I know what you're asking for, is it safe to say most cows are grass fed?

I keep hearing grass finished and grain finished, so I'm assuming they are grass fed, but finished according to the end users wants.

Is there a such thing as grain fed, grain finished cows?

Green eyed farms

Holy crap, their prices!

The last 1/4 cow I bought was in January and I paid $5.50/lb. The most I've ever paid for bulk was $7/lb.

Those people are wanting $8.50 for whole, $9 for a 1/2, and $9.50 for a 1/4.

If you raise them chances are pretty good that you know more about the grass/grain fed than I do. I do know I’m looking for grass finished, which is less common than grain finished, though I’ve heard arguments both ways on what’s better. I know grain finished generally results in better marbling but the balance of omega 3 vs 6 changes. It’s also what the wife wants so that’s what I’m searching for.
As far as the prices go, I had a small scale (4-6 cattle at a time plus a few alpacas) farmer I bought from in WA that was probably doing the “farm” thing for the tax breaks, and when I started buying from him it was $2.90 lb cut and wrapped, and we had to buy the whole steer. He went to $3.80 the last year we were there. Times have changed quite a bit since then and I’m probably not seeing those prices again anytime soon.

Fixed the title to be a little more clear. Thanks for pointing that out
