Anyone ride Deal's Gap / Tail of the Dragon?

I'm not interested in riding the Dragon at all. Don't care if some consider it a "destination"/bucket-list ride. I've ridden the Black Forest & Bavarian Allgäu extensively, so it's not too likely the scenery & curves will particularly wow me. Given that, why would I risk the crowds of squids & tourists? I'm sure it's pretty, but I'm positive there are plenty of equally beautiful roads in the area with many fewer testosterone fueled chuckleheads to try to dodge.

I'd love to find a decent little place near Maggie Valley to use as a base for a 3 or 4 day excursion. I want to visit the Wheels Through Time museum & spend a couple days exploring the local roads.

Any good riding roads near RTP?
One of the best roads that I know is old liberty road, between Liberty and Asheboro. It’s curvy in sections, but you have to be careful of where they have patched it. Also has a few one lane bridges to watch out for.

Crazy Carl I do not find the scenery at Deals Gap is that good. Every now and then you will find a motorcycle part hanging from a tree. Much better roads in NC for scenery.

You got a good plan there. I recommend one of the cabins at Creekside RV resort. They're brand new, and cheap to rent for a weekend. Creekside is a clean campground with great owners.

276 from Waynesville south to Etowah and on to Hendersonville is my favorite motorcycle loop of all time. It's absolutely hands-down better than the Tale of the Squiddraggin

I just got a KLR! I love it! Has not been off road yet and you are right it is ild school and heavy as sin for something offroad. I like looking down at jeeps though.

You should take that thing to Cataloochie Valley. You'll love it, and the Elk. More dirt than offroad, the road is paved in most of the way so it's more a scenic drive.

Love that road & is my preferred way to slip down to the Uwharrie. There are a lot beautiful back roads to be found out this way. My preferred Uwharrie route takes me through Alamance, Chatham, Randolph, Montgomery, Moore & Guilford counties with less than 10 miles of that run on 4-lane roads. Then again, I like to explore & wander & begin almost every ride with the hope of getting lost.

Person & northern Durham counties have some really pretty roads as well. I need to get back up that way soon & poke around Person & Granville counties, as well as across into VA.

Some friends (Mo & Fred) opened Kickstand Lodge (http://www.kickstandlodge.com/) in Stecoah, NC right before Fred passed away. Only been there twice but it was a very nice "motorcycle" campgrounds. They even had small cabins to rent. Easy rides to the Gap.

I can tell you from experience that it stinks to ride that stretch of road for work during the summer in a company Suburban.
