I’ve got a 16” 5.56mm rifle w/ Shilen blank barrel that’s not filling a role anymore; if I’m shooting precision 5.56 I normally grab my 20” rifle.

Debating swapping it for a 6ARC barrel to use for hunting and longer range shooting.

I’m really interested in a 16-18” carbon fiber Proof Research barrel mainly to make it as light as possible (will be using a lightweight suppressor with it) for carrying for long periods of time. Not opposed to a stainless barrel but the weight savings of the Carbon fiber Proof barrel is appealing

I figure I can use 90-100gr bullets for hunting to keep some velocity going in the shorter barrel. I know with the popularity of 6mm in general, supplies can be hit or miss on precision bullets but I found 90 and 95gr Bergers pretty easily.

Any feedback would be appreciated

No personal experience with the 6ARC. But, (there's always a but/butt), from my reading on it, it's a great target round equivalent to the 6.5 Grendel in many ways. However, the 6.5 Grendel, while a good target round, makes a better hunting round.

6ARC >= 6.5G for target
6.5G > 6AR for hunting

if that makes sense.

Coincidentally, I have a complete upper in 6.5G in the BST. I'd let you borrow it to try out if you want.

120-129 class for hunting out to 400+ from a 16". 90-123 class for varmint and target

ETA: There are a few threads of discussion on 6ARC vs 6.5G over on the Grendel forum.

I’ve got a bolt gun in 6ARC. I don’t have enough time on it to give any honest opinions. But I like what I have seen from the cartridge so far.

I built a Mk12 Mod 1 in 6 ARC, and it's done really well with reloads. I gave it to a buddy of mine in AZ and he sent me back a bunch of pictures of .3" 5-shot groups from load development. It's a really sweet round to build an AR off of.

The availability of brass and projectiles for 6.5 grendel would make the decision easy for me….6.5 grendel. However the 6 arc looks nifty too, I just like to have plentiful brass supply.

The 22-250 and 22Br that people have been running seems to be 2200-2500 rounds on a barrel.

Thats not terrible and would last 90% of people their life time
Yeah. My mistake. I had read something the other day on the 22CM and confused it with the 22ARC.

I’d like to try the 6mm over 6.5 to retain some speed in a shorter barrel.

22ARC is kind of interesting but it’s not a whole lot faster than my 20” .223 (it’s doing everything I could do with my 224Valkyrie while keeping barrel and brass life) so the juice isn’t worth the squeeze for what I’d gain there versus stepping up to 6mm.
