Anyone with a Tundra?

So I've finally got the Jeep in semi-running order enough to make it to and from work. It's not happy about it but I'm not an automatic transmission guy so I'm not even going to try to pull it all apart to rebuild it. It's taken enough blood and sweat to get this thing right and I'm just done with it.

I'm looking at Tundras (2016+) to replace the old girl and wanted to see if anyone has one here that they can tell me the positives, negatives, and maybe settle a dispute between the wife and I about whether we need a CrewMax or not.

From a service/repair perspective, they're awesome. Very few issues. Great trucks. Only negative would be they don't get great fuel mileage.
Personally, I'd want CrewMax, but you lose bed space, unless you go with a long wheelbase.

I’m not too worried about fuel mileage as my work has a fueling station that’s open for use to employees at a heavy discount. [emoji57]

The CrewMax short bed is big enough to fit an engine or my mountain bikes in, so it’s perfect for the what I need. The biggest thing I’m running into is back seat space. I need two car seats back there and the double cab just doesn’t look big enough.

Besides, the CrewMax looks infinitely better IMHO.

No way the double cab will be big enough for car seats. I have a 2018 Tacoma 4 door and it’s back seat is too small to fit a rear facing car seat behind either of the front seats, unless you don’t want to use that seat. The Tundra DC back seats are the same size or smaller than the Tacoma as far as legroom goes. Thankfully I was able to fit it in the middle.

This revelation almost led me to trade in my Tacoma for a Raptor or Tundra 4 door. The “double cab” Tundra isn’t a 4 door in my mind.


PS: Thanks Toyota for for using the term “double cab” very differently for Tundra and Tacoma. Tacoma DC = 4 normal doors, Tundra DC = 2 half doors in the back, Tundra CM = 4 normal doors.

I've got a 21013 DoubleCab. It's a great truck. I bought it with 18k miles and it's at 96k now without a single issue. I upgraded to Fuel rims with 285/55R20 Open Country Toyo A/T tires. Gas mileage went from 18+mpg with stock setup to 15mpg. I've got the 5.7L with flex fuel option but I always run regular 87.
I have 2 kids (17 and 21) and we haul a camper regularly so they're in the backseats a lot. No complaints. I can sit comfortably back there and I'm 6'1". You can DEFINITELY fit 2 booster seats back there (not sure about rearward facing car seats).
I have the 6' bed and use a rail mount to grab the frame on my mountain bike. It's not exactly like that one but it's similar. I can fit my 29" large specialized stumpumper in there with the tailgate closed (barely).

I had a 2018 Tacoma DCSB, and I could BARELY get them in if I moved the front seats up a bit. Looking at the 2016+ Tundra DC it just doesn't looking any bigger than that. so I'm trying to avoid running into those issues again. That's why I'm leaning towards the CrewMax...but the cost is vastly different between the two.

The rearward is what's causing the dilemma. I may just have to find one locally and see if I can get it in. I'm not worried about the passenger side, it's the driver side as my seat sits further back than my wife's, who's very rarely in the car with me anyway.
I've got a tailgate cover that hold the bike in, so the bed can be even shorter since the fork and front wheel are hanging off the back.

I drove a 2016 Tundra for two years as a company vehicle and they are wonderful trucks IMO. Never had a single issue and love the size and solid feel of the truck. My personal truck is a Tacoma, so I like Toyota products and I have had several through the years and have had very few issues. I have also owned and driven as company trucks both Fords and Chevys and IMO Toyota makes a far better truck.

I agree 100%. The Ram's and Chevy's definitely have better interiors, by a long shot. The Tundra's and Tacoma's, even the top-tier versions, are pretty basic and dated when it comes to the interior. But as far as a truck goes, I think Toyota is way ahead in every other aspect.
 
I’ve got a 2018 double cab and love it. Gas mileage is about 14.5 but it’s got plenty of power. I couldn’t find a crewman with the 6.5’ bed so I bought this one. If your local to Burlington Cox Gabe me the best price within 100 miles just FYI

My 2010 Tundra CrewMax has a very spacious rear cabin - admittedly at the cost of a 5.5' bed. And I wish it had underseat storage capability. But for car seats and grown-a$$ adults, it's the shizznit!

Yeah I think that’s fair. Whenever I hear of something dumb breaking on a new car, it’s never a Toyota.

Bingo! I don’t know why they don’t have underseat storage...my old 2003 Tundra had it and that only had an access cab. My 2018 Tacoma had it and you couldn’t fit a shoebox in it.

I had a 2016 TRD Pro Crewmax. It was great, but the AC leaks all over the floorboard if you consistently park it nose up on a hill. Took months for Toyota to tell me it shouldn't be parked uphill as the AC drain is on the front.

The Crewmax had tons of room.
 
I’ve got a 2016 Crewmax with two car seats in the back and have plenty of room. Absolutely love the truck! I upgraded from a Tacoma a little over a year ago. You should never buy a Toyota truck for gas mileage, but sounds like that’s not a worry anyways. You buy a Toyota for longevity. My truck has 136k on it now and runs great! Only question you need to ask yourself is, “What are you waiting for?”

I’d be looking at used ones, because new ones are obscenely priced. But it seems a 2016+ with less than 50k on it runs about 25-30 grand. I don’t think that’s awful.

The DC Tundra definitely has a little more room than a 4 door Tacoma. I had a 2013 Tundra DC and put 220k trouble free miles on it. I have a 2019 Tacoma now and it is difficult to get a couple adults in the back seat.

Okay good to know. It LOOKS about the same just going by visuals. I think I'm going to try for the CrewMax if I can swing it though. I'd rather have more room in the back seat since a 5.5' bed is plenty for what I'd use it for.

Plus I like the looks better of the CrewMax, just looks more proportional to me.

Anybody have any issues with these? They have the rep of being bulletproof and never really having problems, but I know that's not always accurate.
 
My budget would be $25,000, I just hate having a car payment, so $350/month is my upper limit. If anyone sees one or knows anyone selling one, send it my way!

I found a 2016 CrewMax SR5 TRD Off-Road, but the dealer had it listed for 26,500 and then tacked on almost 3,500 in fees and extras o_O
 
I have a 2017 Tundra Crewmax platinum after coming from a Toyota with the third door, dealing with car seats and work, I’ll never not have a crewmax again..

This is exactly what I'm looking for, same color and everything, doesn't HAVE to be the TRD Off-Road/Sport, but it'd be nice.:

I had the 08 double cab and i wished that i had gotten the crewmax. The back windshield is electric and goes down which i liked. Mine had the old school sliding window... I got it new in 07 and drove it to 99k with no problems. Id agree with others about the interior being basic and the only issue i had was with the jvc stereo it came with. Mine crapped out on me 3 different times while it was covered under warranty, they said they had to see it happen to replace it. The issue was it would cut on and off randomly so for them to see it, they wanted to keep my truck for 2 weeks and drive it around. I told em they were crazy and eventually got a nice guy at toyota to admit they were faulty and agreed to swap it out based on my word. Happened 2 more times after that! thing was crap, but the truck itself was solid and i beat the holy hell out of it daily. I kept it 9 years no problems then a deer ran into the side of it and dented back passenger door to the point the paint was missing. i drove it another 6 months like that and it started to rust. Finally decided to trade it in and still got 13500 for it in pretty rough condition. Other than that radio nonsense id def vouch for the 5.7 v8. Solid and powerful enough to do most truck things. Id say get a crewmax and go about your merry way then trade it in for a decent amount when your ready, something you cant do with other brands as easily. The price has gone waaaaaay up since i got mine in 08 for 29k new out the door and its basically the same truck so take that for what its worth. Good luck

The Crewmax has a sub-woofer under the back seat which negates the use of underseat storage bin. I had a 2011 Double cab, never had a problem of any kind and loved it. Totaled it last year spinning out on a slick interstate at 65mph. Hit the guardrail on the passenger side. Not a scratch on wife or me. That truck saved us!
I liked the 6.5' bed space for sleeping (I'm 6'4")/camping/fishing gear. Plenty of legroom in the back seat even for me. A Crewmax and TRD will cost lots more if on a limited budget. Just my .02
