April/May 2020 50 yard Rimfire Challenge

Good to see another one up. Today would have been a great day. I had every intention of getting the air rifles out, but just didn’t find the time. I just went out to see if I could try, but there is not enough light.

I’ll score it later, cause it’s not gonna win...but I did make it out today. And yes, I shot it sideways on purpose. Hung it that way and then shot R->L in “rows”. It tricks my brain a little if I don’t go in a normal order. I usually do one vertical and one horizontal, but with this one taking 30 shots I figured once was enough for my patience. :D

...and no idea why I threw the last mag of shots off to the right as much as I did.

At least we are getting some people to give it a try! I need to try it again, I have a couple more targets printed. Those bottom rows get pretty small!

I don't have my CZ back yet but I'm going to give it a try tomorrow with my 10//22

Finally got some tome to spend with my new airguns. Both are within our .22 limit.

AGT Uragan in .22 is up first. I already have this one tuned, so it got first crack at. Shot 2 targets yesterday. I scored them 31 and 34. There are a couple iffy ones each way, but since nobody’s catching Rob, I’m not going to worry about it.

I forgot to take a pic of the rifle when I had everything out, so I had to run back out and get a pic. I was going to shoot the 177 as well, but that turned into an ammo test day, so I will have to shoot the target later in the month, now that I know what she likes.

Here's my go at it with my 10/22. I definitely pulled some shots and I'm sure a few are flyers. But I feel pretty happy with it for my first try. I scored it as 20. The orange group was fired when I sighted in it so I feel the rifle is more accurate than me until I get better at the basics lol. Was 5 shots .

Welcome to the Challenge! Glad to have new shooters. Looks like a 20. Is that your own private range? Wish I had a private range! :D

Thanks! Yes, it's at my in-laws. Awesome to have. Have it set for 0-100 yards.

The range I go to is not reopening until June 2. So it will be a while for me. It will be interesting getting back out shooting these targets after being down so long.

Yeah man. Welcome!
That is actually pretty good considering the ammo. Ammo in 22lr makes a big difference consistency wise. You can tell that you have it shooting well.

Keep shooting with us. It is all in good fun. I love these targets and shoot them all year competing with myself, to see how I can improve.

I definitely plan to! I ordered a bunch of different 22 brands to try out. That was Wolf MT I shot the above target with but have some green tag and various S&K ammo on the way to try as well.

can I ask where you ordered from?

Mostly from target sports USA but I got the S&K from brownells. They both have decent stock but you can only order certain types in bulk from target sports, so I wanted to try a couple boxes of a few and ordered those from brownells.

10/4. I’ve been looking at outdoorlimited but haven’t seen any better ammo until today. Thanks

I *finally* got a chance to take a crack at this target today. Had some weird issues with the 17HMR ammo, with a lot of split necks and failure to extract. Not having my .17cal cleaning rod, I had to use a pocket knife to pry the stuck cases out of the chamber. Bad batch of ammo perhaps? Who knows...

Marlin 197V in 17HMR
Mueller 8.5-25x optic
Hornady 17gr VMAX ammo
Front rest & rear bag

SCORE = 27

I couldn't hold it together on those 1/4" circles and shanked the whole row. I lost track and put two rounds on the 3/8" row, rightmost circle, so that was counted as a miss. We'll see if I can squeeze in another attempt next weekend.

Just for mine own curiosity, as it’s hard to tell by the pic...can you mark the scores on the target? Or just type them out by row? I’m getting 3-5 points less than that when I try to see what counts as a hit. I really just want to make sure I’m counting my own correctly.

yeah... the scan didn't come out very clear so what I'm seeing on paper isn't what's showing on the screen. Regardless... I don't think I'll be bringing home any trophies with this attempt! Let me try to re-scan and upload again

For realz. Neither of us are winning it with our posted targets...I was just curious. I don’t count any where the rip hits the target, but I couldn’t see some of them very clearly.

I’d have about the same success rate firing one round of .410 birdshot at a fresh target. :D

For what it's worth, in my opinion, scoring anything close without a plug or something isn't very accurate. If you don't have a scoring plug just use a round of whatever you are shooting and gently put it in the hole. It will pretty much center itself and if it touches the higher score, count it.

So I finally got my CZ back with the new stock and was able to shoot a target. I tested some ammo first, some SK standard, SK rifle match, Wolf MT, and some CCI green tag. Trying to figure out what the rifle likes. It didn't like the green tag wouldn't group worth much. SK standard and wolf MT wasn't bad, but still has a flier here and there. SK rifle match was shooting the best so I went ahead and used it for the Target. Hoping to find something this gun really likes but I was still happy with the score here. Counted it a 30.

CZ 455 Tacticool (stock)
Athlon Midas Tac 6-24 mil/mil
SK rifle match
Front bipod, rear bag from a bench.

Thank you sir but honestly I wouldn't know where to start to look for a new target so I bow to your wisdom if you have one ready to choose and post it up. Sorry I have always been more of a shooter than a match director. LOL

I will take a look around and see if I can fins anything fun. Give me today and we will see.

If anyone has any suggestions and would like to help Rob01 with a target, please help.:)
Picking a Target is usually harder than shooting one. :D

I did just run across this one. It’s supposedly for rimfirecentral’s 50yd competition. Pretty straight toward.

How about a variation of this "dot torture" target?

  • There are (10) 2-inch circles
  • Fire the number of appropriate number shots per circle, matching the number. Circle 1 = 1 shot, Circle 2 = 2 shots, etc. 55 shots in all.
  • One point for reach shot inside the circle. 55 points max
  • 50 yards for irons, 100 yards for optics

Rob01 has to shoot with his weak side though :)

Remember this is a 50 yard challenge, some people don't have access to 100 yard range.

...or the patience to shoot 55 rounds. :D

I saw this if a point system could be figured out. Extra points for sinking each ship.

I know we’ve done a battleship one before, but it’s been awhile.

You could say 1pt for each hit in the red. 2pts for each if the whole ship goes down?

Thats 15 shots. Keep it simple and just count one side. You could use the other half for another attempt if you wanted.

Examples:
1. Hit the smallest ship and it’s automatically 2pts
2. Hit 4 on the biggest and it’s 4pts
3. Hit all 5 on the biggest and it’s 10pts

I modified the dot torture target a bit, but I'll save it for another day if we're going to play BATTLESHIP!

6 circles, 3" wide for irons, 1" wide for optics. 50yds. 21 shots total

Is that Battleship image printable? I like BWs point system. I created the attached file last time we did it, because the one I found online at the time was for purchase only.
