AR-15 shotgun upper

Just walk outside, fire 4-5 shells at the ground, yell SNAKE!!!!! Nobody will call the law if you yell snake. Report back on function. lol
Inside CLT city limits? No thanks. :p

I’m already scheduled to go to the range Sunday afternoon. Gonna meet at least one CFF member there, maybe two.

I do want to find another ammo choice or two before I go.

Winchester AA worked best if I recall and those brass Brown Bear shells. Don't know if they are still available or not. Looking forward to the range report.

Thanks. I’m not real concerned about it being picky. As long as I can find 1-2 that work reliably, I’ll buy a case to have around. Can’t imagine it’ll be a high volume shooter...but we’ll see. I checked Outdoor Limited last night and they have quite a few 2.5” options that are at least 1200fps. I would need to actually measure length before I committed...or have @Jeppo stop by there and measure a bunch for me. :D

Is this the Win AA you remember? It’s the other box I bought with the Hornady Critical Defense.

The AA 12ga definitely feed better for me in a tube fed gas gun. The crimp is more uniform. Critical in my limited experience.

Found some slugs today. A .410 diameter 87.5 gr (1/5oz) slug going 1830 FPS might do a little damage.

Still no buckshot. Might try the Kannapolis Academy on the way to PHA tomorrow.

Here’s the sheet from the box:

Tried to load a mag for the first time a little earlier today. Got 5 slugs into the 5rd ATI mag...but can’t even get 2 in the included mag. The first one sits on the follower fine, but it won’t go into the body when you try to insert the second one.

I’d read that before that the ATI mags were more flexible with ammo options.

Goal tomorrow is shoot 5 rounds of everything I bought.

Hmmm...

Just noticed the Hornady Critical Defense is listed on the sheet...at only 750 FPS.

Some more random info. Assuming the ATI mags work while shooting, I’ll probably never use the factory mag. I can’t even get the Winchester AA to load into it. I did get the Remington Express it recommended to load, as well as the Critical Defense. I’ll buy some more of the ATI mags once it’s function tested, shortened, and function tested again.

So far everything I’ve bought loads into the ATI mags. The 15-rounder includes a speed loader, similar to the plastic one that comes with a Glock. It makes a world of difference in getting the brass under the mag lip without catching on the shell below it. And it works on the 5-round ones as well as the factory mag. The ATI mags have a little slit on the back so you can make sure the shells are lined up.

Uumm. We're waiting for the range report Mr. Waylon. I logged in just for the update and found nothing. So I guess it's working and you're having so much fun you forgot about us. Or it's being a pooper and you're feverishly working on it while you still have sunlight.

We didn’t even start shooting until 3p, and it wasn’t first on the list. :p

I’m leaving the range and will get pics and video up when I get home. It was definitely a successful maiden voyage.

Here’s the stack of ammo I ended up with:

Didn’t worry about stopping today for buckshot. Figured if it’ll run all that, I could wait for the final configuration before buying additional ammo.

Goal was to shoot 5 rounds of each. @Zbizzle911 was already there when @falconew and I arrived. We shot some 9mm, 5.56, 22LR, 224 Valkyrie and 308 suppressed. Zach’s Harvester and my Turbo, Saker 762 and Omega 300 on the rifles...first real exposure for Warren to silencers. Also shot 9mm AR and my 15-22.

Then it was time to try the .410 upper. I used all four mags, but had multiple issues with ammo fitting into the factory mag. All of them worked just fine in the ATI mags.

LRBHO only worked once or twice. I had two feeding issues. It shot, ejected, and the next round only went halfway in. One of the times was the Hornady Critical Defense in the factory mag. The other was the Herter’s slugs, and I (unfortunately) didn’t keep track of which mag it was.

Everything else ran flawlessly. I think it’s a keeper. I’ll hang on to the rest of the ammo to use once it’s shortened. We just shot into the berm, so no idea how it patterns. It had been test fired from the factory (I’m assuming) based on the dirty barrel, and based on sighting though the barrel they had the sights lined up. I have a red dot I’ll add once I get it back.

Was thinking about disassembling the upper and shipping it off to ECCO tomorrow, then remembered the chokes haven’t even shipped to me, yet. Guess I’ll hold off for a bit. :(

Never really considered a .410 upper but one cut down a bit like you’re planning on seems pretty cool.

From a ballistics perspective, the energy of these 1/2oz loads at 1250fps is 760lbft, only a little less than common .300BLK supers or 5.56. Wonder how well it will suppress... I’m sure you figure that out soon enough.

Oh yeah, I just remembered one minor issue. When we were done shooting, I noticed the handguard was slightly loose and rattled. I think falconew shot the last 3-4 mags, so I’m not sure exactly when it happened and neither is he. We both know it was tight when we started. I’m assuming tightening the screws will fix it up, so I’ll try that in the morning.

Tightened them back up and rail was snug with no movement. No bigger issue at hand for this problem. Didn’t back the screws out to see if they had any threadlocker, so if they loosen again I’ll add some.

This is on the recommended list, and is cheaper than everything else (I think the blue box of Federal might’ve been the same price). Figured I’d grab a couple boxes. Once I get it in its final config, I’ll figure out if any of the stuff that has worked is something ODL stocks in quantity.

could of happened when I was doing the rapid fire. Maybe a little loctite to hold it in place better.

ODL? Sorry I'm new, where?

Alright...so fess up.

1. How many of you have ordered one of these uppers since the thread started?
2. And how many that have are going to shorten the barrel?
3. What other configurations are you planning on?

I did some searching for mags yesterday, and the best deal I found was KY Gun Co. Shipping was a fixed $11.99, so you can spread that cost over several of the ATI Omni mags.

I will say you probably want at least one of the 15rd, just to get the loader. Some of the reviews I read said they might not work as well with 10+ rounds in them, but I only loaded to 5 each time. I’ll give it a shot with a full mag later on.

I've got 3 lowers to build. One is getting a PWS MK109 upper I think. One is getting a CMMG 9mm upper. One is now undecided thanks to Mr. Waylon...to be continued....

I’m thinking real seriously about it. If I go this route the plan would be a shortened barrel with a pinned and welded suppressor. I’d like to learn more about the dependability of the 15 round mags first though.

So you’re wanting a stock instead of a brace/blade?
