AR-15 shotgun upper

Mine showed up. The mag that came with it looked pretty long. 20200310_181009.jpg

so do they require a signature, or drop this at the door?

Probably depends on who you buy it from. Mine didn’t require a signature from the seller...but I had it held at a local store and had to sign there to pick it up.

Can the hand guard be changed on these?
Watch the video back on page 1. There’s a piston system used and the hand guard covers it. I haven’t taken mine apart yet so I’m not sure how integral it is.

Best I can tell from the video, the “barrel nut” looks proprietary, if it’s a nut at all in the AR15 style. The hand guard just has anti-rotation tabs and 3 set screws that tighten in a channel on the nut. The way he said quadrail in the video seemed to insinuate that there may be a non-quadrail version???

Quad seems to be the only option from my searching...

Oh, that one did not show on the Garyasar/Centerfire website (update, Strike that, just looked again and there it is:oops:). I like the way that one looks. Was looking for a Mlok version, but I really need to quit coming back to this thread before I end up ordering one!!!

Got two 15rd and 1 4rd IFC mags to play with. The remmy shells drag pretty bad but the NSI shells load with no issues. 20200312_163727.jpg

You really need to try the ATI mags.

Thats next, these were basically just impulse buys because I was laying around the house with the flu. These look really cheap made compared to the ATI mags.

We did have a mag issue today. 5rd ATI mag, right out of the box. Loaded up fine, but the last round didn’t chamber. The follower is getting stuck somewhere. You can jam it down with your fingers and sometimes it’ll spring all the way back to the top, and sometimes it stops short.

Bad on on the right in the first pic, and left on the second. Just sent them an email to see if they want to handle it directly, or if I need to contact KYGunCo since that’s who I ordered then from.

Got a reply yesterday (from ATI) asking for name, address, where I bought it, etc. I supplied the info and this morning had a reply saying they’d processed a return and also got an email from FedEx with a return label. FedEx was at the house an hour or so ago to deliver a package and the driver took my return. So, it’s in route to Summerville, SC ~24 hours after they got in Monday morning and read my email.

I also got an email from Optics Planet on Friday the 13th giving me an updated estimated shipping date of Sat 3/21 for the chokes.

If anybody is local to Charlotte/Concord/Huntersville and wants their barrel cut down (threaded or not), let me know. Maybe I can send them all in one box so we save shipping and he can do them all back to back.

Oh yeah, and as a warning/lesson-learned for the rest of you...

Be aware there’s a plastic tab inserted into the side of the follower that’s using a spring to provide tension. That’s the little piece you see in my pics, that I think activates LRBHO (didn’t pull the firearm out to double-check). If you remove the baseplate and spring, and push the follower down, it will potentially launch the spring and tab a pretty good distance if you’re not prepared. Luckily I was sitting in the front seat my wife’s car when I tried it, so it didn’t have very far to go and hide.

I used to have one of these way back. Worked well as long as I could get the rounds in the mag
Did you use just IFC mags? Or did you also run the ATI mags?

When I bought it it was under the ati name so only used their mags upper is identical from my understanding they get brought in under different names every few years

The ATI mags are definitely different than the one that came with the IFC upper. I had several ammo types that wouldn’t load into the included mag but fit just fine in the ATI.

Haven’t seen an ATI upper in person to know if they’re similar.

Oh I was talking about upper on that front. Sorry booze and dropkick Murphy's clouding my typing. It was a fun gun though

You guys suck and are the reason my gun safe is jam-packed and I never have any money.
I just bookmarked the centerfiresystems website. Cheapest place it seems and am looking for ATI mags now...
I'm fresh out of lowers though (got a pending build taking my last). On the hunt for lowers now too!

I picked up one of these from a forum member a few years back.

Fun to shoot for sure but I like the idea of using a regular lower.

I just ordered a few ATI mags from KY gun Co. @BigWaylon had mentioned them earlier.

Did you check to make sure KY isn't doing the Shelter in place thing? I already got boned with an indefinite on -hold status on an order somewhere else. They aren't answering calls so I don't know yet if it's just the weekend or if they're stuck at home or sick or what.

The website said they have new hours but I am in no hurry so a few weeks is a non issue to me.

Has anybody taken theirs apart, yet? I followed the video I posted back on the first page and got it down to this point.

At that point do you think it’s just removing that barrel nut? Probably some proprietary wrench? (I’ve built a dozen or more lowers but never an upper, so I don’t have those could extra tools.

You might be able to get that off with a strap wrench.

Be careful. That nut looks pinned. You could destroy the upper threads wrenching it off...

Yeah, I’d already decided I wasn’t taking it any further. I left a voicemail for IFC, but haven't heard back. I’m going to let Nick @ ECCO handle it from here.

@bigfelipe

Just curious...was this your concern?

In case that’s what @bigfelipe spotted...it bothered me as well after he mentioned it and looked at the pics again.

I grabbed the upper again this morning to look closer. There are three of those, at the 3/6/9 o’clock positions...but there’s nothing on the inside of the nut at that point. A quick a-ha moment later and I realized they’re just the three marks from the screws that hold the handguard in place.

Ah... Gotcha... That makes sense. Really looked like a blind pin from the first pic...

Not sure if anybody else is moving forward with this project, but I have a minor update. I’ve been holding off on sending my upper for a cut/thread until I had the chokes in hand. They were ordered back on 2/24 with an Availability of “Estimated to ship within 7-16 days”. On 3/9 I got an Update email that said “New estimated ship date of Saturday March 21”. Haven’t heard anything else and sent them an email earlier this week asking for status. No response, but I checked order status online and sometime in the last 2-3 days it’s been updated to and estimated ship date of 4/15/20.

I went back to the thread on AR15 to get the guy’s name that did a pretty detailed write-up. It was Edward Avila...who happens to be the founder of AR15 if you didn’t know. I’d read in another thread that Ed Sr died within the last week or so (no idea if it’s Covid-19 related), but I don’t know if the person posting was Sr or Jr. Either way, the account hasn’t been online since early March.

However, I looked through the write-up and pics and it was mentioned the chokes index off the muzzle instead of the shoulder, which make a little sense. You wouldn’t want a gap between the muzzle and the inner lip of the choke. The factory flash hider appears to be the exact length so that it hits the muzzle and shoulder at the same time.

Here was a pic of the inside of the choke:

36D8D0A9-D327-4D4E-BCA2-62C632849FE6.jpeg

And then this pic showed that the choke doesn’t quite come down to the shoulder:

ABCAE08A-B5BB-48C5-A69E-BB783E409C54.jpeg

So, I figured if I had the barrel rethreaded to the factory thread length, it would let me use the flash hider or the chokes. If I waited longer and had it thread to be a perfect length for the chokes, the flash hider would hit the shoulder before it hit the muzzle and I’d have a little gap inside that sounds like a bad idea.

If that’s the case, why wait. Just boxed up the upper and created a packing slip. I’ll drop it off tomorrow and ECCO should have it midweek. Hopefully it’s a 1-2 week wait and then I’ll have it back and put it all back together...assuming reassembling the piston upper is as straightforward as disassembling it was.
