AR-15 STOLEN FROM NC WILDLIFE OFFICER’S TRUCK

Sorry man, but the truth and even my own experience during my lifetime simply does not support you. Wildlife populations across the board are better now than they were in the first half of the 20th century, before the establishment of US Fish and Wildlife Service and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. I do have at least some education and experience about this. I served a short stint as a Wildlife Enforcement Officer in the mid 80's. Even during my lifetime (I'm now 65) I have seen a marked improvement in the numbers and variation of wildlife I see. The Wildlife commission does not only work to improve game animal populations, they also have a nongame management program as well.

Interesting. If you have any knowledge of it, Please explain the Red Wolf program if you have any knowledge of it, whereas US Fish and Wildlife thought it would be a great idea to release a hybrid coyote species on not only federal land but also private farms in Eastern NC, then lie about it for nearly 30 years. All the while accepting money from private 'conservation' groups whose members were on a rotating carousel of former USFWS employees.

Marked improvement in the numbers and variation of wildlife can be attributed to many factors. Not sure the farmers and hunters in Dare, Hyde, and Terrell counties would agree.

Then there's that tiny little issue of commercial fisherman allowed to nearly destroy the fisheries in NC while every sport fisherman must open a cooler for the ever dwindling saltwater limits being forced upon them and loosing access to miles of shoreline.

I am not a lawyer, but I expect many of the warrantless searches are allowed under the "exigent circumstances" rule; that is, the evidence would be gone by the time the officer went to a magistrate and got a warrant. Given that he's in remote areas, alone, and the evidence can be dumped overboard or turned loose, that seems reasonable in those circumstances. I realize some of you may disagree and I respect that.

I have a pretty good impression of the game wardens around here. Every one I've ever interacted with has been great to deal with, returned my calls promptly, and acted professionally. Every sport needs a referee on the field. I wouldn't want to be out in the woods hunting without someone to provide some order, protect the herd, and keep the poachers off my land.
Wait, do boating accidents, where guns are lost, fall under the jurisdiction of Wildlife Officers?:D

Thats your job.
He's contracting that out.;)

What has not been mentioned is that it's not just about hunting. Land development and other man-made "progress" has severely has impacted natural habitats and natural wildlife patterns. Man, historically, will hunt a species to extinction or conversely "protect" them to the point of unhealthy herds. It has become necessary to "manage" wildlife in order to preserve it. I believe that is what the Wildlife Service is trying to do and I think they have done some good.

That is changing again.
Very cyclical.
They try one thing and they mess up so they try the opposite for a different reaction.
They say now too many deer, so they let the coyote population go crazy, reintroduce the wolf, protect the bear at all costs and give the human pretty much an endless killing opportunity. Guess what, keep this crap up and the deer population will be right back to where is was when I was a kid.

They are swayed by the insurance industry and politics and money just like any other .gov run organization.

The animal is actually way down on the list.

Hmmmmm......OK......Let's try this. I'm speaking to everyone here with this. Let's say someone dies, and leaves you in charge. All of a sudden there is no US Fish and Wildlife, no NCWRC, no Game Wardens, no wildlife biologists, no wildlife management folks, no crews to build and maintain boating access areas, no nothing, and everyone looks at you and says.........YOU make up the guidelines as to how we handle this stuff...............OK.....We are starting from scratch......Now you're in charge.......you have total control.........How would you handle things........let's have YOUR ideas............ Fire away.

I see you are new here. You will soon learn that there are some here that think the only way to Utopia is no gov or taxes at all.

I'm sorta new here. I've been a member of NCGO for quite awhile.....lot of the same folks here. I agree with what you said....I just want to hear their ideas (and yours and others) as to how things ought to work. And how things ought to work under the so called "Utopia". Come on now folks............let's GITERDUUUUUUNNNNNNNN!!!!!

OK Tailhunter..........Now let's hear your solutions.................come on now..............I know you've got the answers we need.

Let's flip this around. Why do these things have to include "officers" going around treating people like dirt and having an attitude like they have a 16 inch dick and a pair of bowling balls?

I've been duck hunting and quail hunting all my life and have had interactions with many wardens. I've never been mistreated. Maybe the common denominator in all of your experiences is you?

Because the Squirrels need them. You know there would be no Squirrels without warrant less searches. Without stings in which they are the ones committing the crimes. Without harassment. We must put up with these "imperfections" because bambi and thumper can't make it without game wardens.

That is low, even for you.

When was the last time you saw a quail in the state of NC?
A pay to play doesn't count.

It's been a long time. Those landowners that take care of game now harvest every inch of their fields and don't leave hedgherows and grown up corners that is habitat that quail like.

So buy up some land and plant some habitat.

Predators play a large part in the demise of the quail and other game birds. Roaming house and feral cats are a big problem too.
Until the management of preditors becomes common place the other animals will suffer.

The stopping of the fur market played the biggest role.

But why ? "much less wildlife cops."

Because violating my constitutional right to protection from illegal search and seizure should be done only because of EXTREMELY exceptional circumstances, not because a wildlife agent thought I might have shot a deer without proper paperwork.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy and respect wildlife more than most, and it's one reason I don't hunt. I do value constitutional rights far more than deer potentially without paperwork though.

So it is called private industry.

This thread has reminded me of the notion that some, if not most, of us don't need laws and law enforcement keeping us in line to be good, upstanding people or citizens.

OK folks................I've seen complaints, coarse language, couple more examples of name calling.................but no solutions or answers to my question. By the way, the last time I saw Quail was earlier this year on the land where I do my target shooting........watched about six walk across my shooting lane about 50 or so yards in front of me. Maybe a fluke, I don't know, but there they were. Now, come on folks, you are in charge. You get to come up with how things should be done. Let's hear some ideas.

Hi Donnie D (I'm glad you're here and look forward for some links to videos in the future!)

How about letting honest hunters and land owners call the cops when they see poachers, and lets make the cops actually do something, and the courts subsequently punish wrong doers.

That would be a good start.

Has anyone provided an example of these "warrantless" searches? Without hearing the exact circumstances how can you say they aren't a valid use of the officer's authority?

I'm not a hunter and don't interact with them much so I don't know what their authority actually is so maybe someone can explain what it is and where it is written.

Thank you John for you comments and ideas. (hope to make a vid soon of the results of a successful deer hunt, but so far it ain't lookin too good). Just keep in mind that the local Police and Sheriffs pretty much have their hands full with domestic issues, and don't have the knowledge and training of fish, game, boating and wildlife issues to handle them. That is what Wildlife Officers are for.
I AGREE 100% with your post. Honest hunters, fishermen, boaters and others trying to enjoy the resources of our beautiful state, that witness poaching and any other violations should report them. But I wouldn't go to a car dealership looking to buy a hunting rifle, and I wouldn't call the Police Dept or Sheriffs Office to report poaching. That is what the Fish and Game Commission is for. Simple.

Search the AOC website for citations giving by WRC officers. http://www1.aoc.state.nc.us/www/calendars/OfficerQuery.html
You can search by county. 90% are for things other than wildlife violations, esp during no open hunting season. The role of these wardens has completely changed.

Must be where those Ghillie Suits (not hunter orange), robots and AR15s come in handy.

As far as I remember from my law enforcement training, and that was a looooooong time ago, this is an example...... Say you were pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding, and when he approached your vehicle, he could plainly see a large bale of wacky weed in the back seat, he would not need a search warrant to take it, and further search your vehicle, and deal with you accordingly. It was in plain sight and he did not have to search your vehicle to find it. If I'm wrong about this I apologize.

That is because they are law enforcement the same a Sheriffs, State Troopers, etc. If a Deputy Sheriff sees you firelighting, he will arrest you. If a Wildlife officer sees you driving 90 in a 55 mph zone, he will arrest you.

Or, they arrest you for parking violations, kinda like a high priced meter maid
Misdemeanor SOLELY VIOLATION RULES OF WRC 113-135.1(A)

You just made my point. Since 90% of their job is done by every other branch of LEO, would be a great source of cost savings along with the NC ALE. Wouldn't lose as many AR15s that way.

Hi Donnie

I'd say cops enforce all sorts of things .... and they do it (generally) without violating constitutional rights. We did away with the DMV cops, we could do away with armed nature cops the same way. If we needed more cops, we could transfer them to the PD with the PD rule set.

Normally when you sign your license you are agreeing to certain conditions but not many people can be bothered to actually read the conditions.

Just yesterday I was hunting the Pee Dee Refuge and it clearly states on the permit that "Entry onto Pee Dee refuge constitutes consent to an inspection of licenses, permits, vehicles, game bags, creels, coolers and all hunting and/or fishing equipment"

We encountered an NC WRC officer and he asked how we had done. At that point we only had 2 squirrels and asked if he wanted to see them. He refused and advised that on another tract he had seen many more than where we were currently hunting. We moved to that tract and did in fact find more and the walking was a lot easier. He didn't have to tell us about a better spot, he did it because he wanted us to be more successful and have more enjoyment.

I've been hunting since I was 8 (now 68) so I think I have more experience in the field and woods than most folks on the forum and I have been checked countless times and can recall once that I had a bad taste in my mouth after the encounter. The guy was less than respectful toward my wife, I immediately intervened and brought the contact to an end. She was a little put off so I encouraged her to file a complaint. She did file her complaint and within 12 hours a Major called her to apologize for the wardens attitude and within the next 24 hours the warden in question called her and apologized for his attitude. Situation over and resolved.

You can view them anyway YOU want, I feel I've made my position crystal clear........

Law Enforcement is Law Enforcement, You call 911 they then call out the closest Officer. And it is more like you do not go to a Honda Dealer for a new Ford.

Plain view rule, sure. I'm talking about this "authority" people are referring to to search vehicles people and houses without warrants, and without probable cause. An "authority" I am not entirely sure exists.

As far as the notion of having one law enforcement agency handle everything (the WDALEA...We Do it All Law Enforcement Agency...I left out the "i" for "it" because it looks cooler that way) I see it kinda like this. I've been doing carpentry and woodworking (just two of my many hobbies) since I was a young'un (65 now), and I know quite a bit about those types of tools, I own many. However, over the years I've fallen for a couple of the "this tool does it all" thing, and yes (even in my infinite wisdom) I've bought a few. I also found out that those do it all tools indeed do a lot of jobs.....but do none of them well.

Can't read, or comprehend??? Second paragraph of my last post.....

OK.... The solution is to revamp the entire DNR structure, And that ain't gonna happen. Its kinda like when the police dept start to militarize. No more beat cops , everyone is in an armored personnel carrier with turret guns.
First these sting operations have gotta stop. DNR spends millions on sting ops that sometimes last for years. Note- the bear poaching sting that went ever so wrong. http://www.smokymountainnews.com/ne...ng-sting-uses-dubious-tactics-to-trap-hunters. If they cannot do their investagations with good cop work then they need to get another job. No warrant entry !!!!!!!!!!!!! This has gotta stop. DNR officers are trespassing on private land setting up cameras and other traps to catch a man on his own property minding his own business. Again millions are being spent on rabbit hole adventures based on speculation and sometimes it seems like the DNR just has nothing better to do. So they gotta spend the money in order to get more next year. Sneaking around rifle ranges to ticket guys who make minor violations. "Shooting from a prone position outside the cover stalls" This crap has to stop. A regular patrol is needed but cameras, high tec equipment to film someone shooting trash at a range, Geeez..... Millions of dollars spent to repopulate elk just to allow their hunting buddies with lots of cash and political donations to hunt them. My tax dollars and lic fees should not go to subsidise exotic animal blood sports! And yes!! They do need to be patroling ramps when they are in use. Why do they even need an AR on a rack anyway? Cool factor maybe!!! DNR needs to get back to basic DNR duties. Checking for hunting and fishing lic. and patrolling during hunting season. Responding rapidly to the reports of poaching in the off season. Responding to trespassing reports in a rapid manner. Developing a tag system and monitoring this system at processing centers/investigating clandestine processing and hunt camps. ............ That is enough for a start. And its just the tip of the rifle as to what goes on at the DNR.
