My son wants a AR22. What is the general thoughts on this rifle. Does it cycle good? I don’t know anything about these as I have never owned any. Is one brand better than another?

Buy an M&P 15-22 and be done with it. :D
Seconded.
Is it Ammo specific or will it cycle most anything?
Pretty much. S&W says stay away from thunderbolt, so of course I had to try it. They're right, it sucked. So there are ammo's it won't care for, but it's not a prevalent thing.
It seems to like 40gr. ammo in the 1100-1200 fps range.
Would you buy it again knowing what you know now
Yes. It's a great little gun and a favorite with all ages. Perfect for training newbies on black rifles.

Mine is cut down to 4.5” but it eats almost anything. It’s mainly been fed bulk pack Blazer.

The manual for mine includes this:

Another +1 for the S&W. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many thousands of rounds I have through it. Bought my son one as well and he loves it. Never had ammo issues and mostly feed it bulk packs for plinking and CCI when I was shooting it in rimfire matches.

If you can find one ... and it is worth the search ... a Tippmann M4-22. They have an aluminum upper and lower not polymer so they have a real feel of a centerfire rifle and their components are 95% interchangeable with centerfires.

Agreed, LGS has a couple FA posties that run very well, mags are slick too.

I picked up a M&P 15-22 promotion that included a cheap red/green dot and a nice zippered case. It’s a tremendous amount of fun for the money. A 25 round mag dump costs $1.

My only regret is not buying several. ;)

Another plug for the M&P 15-22 here. I bought up so much of the Federal Premium ammo in the blue box back in 2012 it's the only ammo I've ever tried in mine.

I love the platform and it will do it's job if I do mine regarding accuracy.

I'll also recommend the 15-22.
It's totally not worth building a "real" .22 AR when you can get that thing. Just getting the barrel and the bolt approaches the same cost.

I originally had one of the CDNN conversion kits and loved it. Then when DPMS came out with the dedicated .22, sold the kit and bought two of them for myself and girlfriend's son. A dueling tree and a brick of ammo made for great Saturday afternoons. And cheap. The ones I got have run everything I have put through them. They are worth every penny for the fun factor. Also accurate, I scoped one and have squirrel hunted with it. Sadly the DPMS are no longer available
