I am wanting an AR pistol in 9mm. I can not decide on barrel length. I dont plan on putting a can on it, but never say never.
Thoughts on barrel length? It will be home protection, casual shooting, maybe even a carbine match or two.

Most places won't let you shoot with a brace in a carbine match. Would have to be an sbr with a stock to shoot a barrel under 16".

Mine is an SBR, but I went with 7" for mine.

Might seem backwards but I would base it off what handguard you are planning on getting. I wanted the BCM KMR 7 so I chose a Faxon arms 8-1/2" barrel. That put the shoulder of the threads just past the edge of the handguard. I received the handguard first, so I called Faxon and asked them for a measurement from the front of the receiver to be sure before ordering. Suppressor fits nicely.

I built 7" and 5.5" 9mm uppers thinking I'd use the 7" suppressed for home defense and carry the 5" in the car along with my Glock 26. The 5.5" is just a bit more compact suppressed so that may change. At least the pistol with the 7" barrel installed will also fit in the carry bag.

I've got 3 9mm uppers now, 4.5", 8.5", and 16". Have yet to shoot the 16" but to can't be any more fun than the 8.5" and 4.5". Build the lower right and then just have multiple uppers. It's cheap I'd you just swap BCG and check between them since you don't have to buy gas blocks and parts, just receiver, barrel, and handguard.
