I am considering an AR pistol as my next purchase. Are there reliability issues with certain barrel length and gas system combos I need to know about? What about stocks - Blade style or Sig Brace?

I’ve got an 11.5” Barnes with the SB3 (I think that’s it) adjustable stock and it is about perfect for me. No interest in the arm brace things.

I have legal SBRs as well. But nice to carry the AR pistol concealed in the truck with things the way they are right now.

10.5 in carbine length - No issues on operation, good to 200yds (I'm sure a bit longer too)
Blade - It is noticeable after 30rds.It's not a 'stock' but then, it's not supposed to be. If you want to protect the blade from cement, and other damage, put a length of hose on it or pool noodle.

Piggybacking a caliber question: I am trying to decide between an AR pistol in 7.62x51 vs. 5.56x45. Anyone have any real-world experience with one in . 308? Is it going to be a recoil/flash/blast beast?

@Damn_Yankee

If you want to head this way, I’m on the Charlotte/Huntersville border. You’re welcome to come see what an SBA3 looks/feels like.

I've got two 7.5 inch, a Palmetto upper kit, and a Combat Armory. Both run with no issues, and even like steel cased ammo. One has a krink style flash hider, and the other a standard birdcage. One wears a kak blade, and the other a Sig brace. I like the blade much better, if only because it's smaller.

If it’s going to be in 5.56, I wouldn’t go any shorter than 10.3 and the SBA3 is the only way to go IMO.

I have two, a 7.5 .300AAC and a 11.5 5.56, both with blades. I have shot quite a bit out of both, and really dont find the blade uncomfortable at all. Are other options "more comfortable"? Possibly. But considering a blade is as cheap as they are, it allows me to put that money into other things I find more important, like ammo and skittles.

I may just take you up on this. I’ll be in touch. Thanks!

I'd direct you to look at the tail hook type brace. They cost a little more, but I find they're more appealing to look at and they actually function as an legitimate arm brace with no straps.

I haven't heard of many reliability issues with any 7.5" or longer.

Some of the 10.3/5" were made with small ports to run better suppressed and would supposedly choke on some of the weak bulk ammo out there. But it wasn't widespread.

My observation is the market has shifted toward the SB brace. I have a blade, don't love it. I think the latest gen of all braces are adjustable, there's probably deals on the older non adjustable, but I would avoid them, I'll probably update mine soon.

Just took my 10.5 out to the range, the sba3 is amazing and comfy to shoot.

I do have a kak blade for sale if you wanted to go that way.

I have a 10.5" pistol with a 15" handguard; it probably wasn't the best choice since it makes the weapon longer to handle.

I'll either cut it down to match then end of the barrel or switch it out for a shorter one.

Mobility is key with an AR pistol.
Care to post a pic?

This is what it was. Sadly she’s gone now....ran over by a skid steer on a work site.

ahhh man that sucks. Was a sharp looking gun though.

when you said a 10 inch barrel and 15 inch hand guard I didn’t realize you had a can attached. I was thinking, man that’s a tuff ass hand guard.

I greatly enjoy tailhook mod2
it's not compatible with a regular carbine buffer tube, but according to gearheadworks, that was a compromise they had to make to get the ATF to allow it as a brace. If they didn't, it would have been too much like a stock... or something. and it pushed their production back by about a year while they had to redesign stuff.

Not problems when I had the 7.5" without a can and had to put a 8" on to use the can. Never had an issue with it besides being loud.

Running a 10.3 with a BA barrel, carbine gas, H2 buffer, SBA3.

I’ve had no issues at all with function or accuracy.

I have an 11.5 BA barrel on a M4E1 upper and lower with SBA3. With a 1-4 lpvo it’s my favorite AR. 12” steel at 300 easily. I can make hits at 500 if I slow down a bit and do my part. Inside of 200 it’s almost too easy to hit steel. And it’s a pistol...so there is that

I have an 11.5 inch Commando style pistol that I Love.
The shortest I think I would go in barrel length is 10.5, maybe, as I've never had issues with the 11.5 inch on my Commando, I might not opt for the shorter length just because of this experience.
As far as braces go, I'm sold on the SBA3. My next pistol build will have one as well.

Have you looked into a build, instead of an out and out buy?

@Damn_Yankee

Just let me know when, and where...you could try out:
4” 9mm
4.5” 22LR
5.5” .45 ACP
7” 9mm
7.5” 5.56mm
8.5” 300BLK
10” 300BLK
10.5” 5.56mm
10.5” .50 Beowulf
11.5” 5.56mm
12” 6.8mm
12” .410 gauge
12” 5.56mm

Could put any of those uppers on a braced or stocked lower. 10 of the 13 you could also try suppressed. Surely one of them would work for you.
