So.... With cancer and chemo and all, my shooting needs have changed. I am not going to any classes or competitions, and rethinking my home SD needs.

I have not had an AR pistol, but wondering about selling an AR and switching to pistol for HD.

Ideas? Thoughts?

If you're into silencers, I'd suggest a 10" barrel with a 6" pinned and welded suppressor (or whatever combination meets the 16" legal minimum). That way you can run a standard stock and no SBR tax.

What I don't like about AR pistols is the difficulty in shooting accurately w/o a stock / brace. Considering the ATF's current direction re braces, eliminating it as a problem might be beneficial.

Additionally, shooting unsuppressed inside an enclosed area (such as a house) can not only deafen you during a bad encounter, the flames coming from a short barrel can also blind you somewhat - especially with a comp / muzzle brake. A silencer will absorb a good portion of the noise and the flash - making this combination a better option for home defense IMO.

Yes, Yes, Yes.

I have taken a few uppers to Heavy Metal in Raleigh and asked them to weld a can on. I used a direct thread suppressor and had a upper, no lower with me. Any real welder can do a quick bead around the barrel and you are good to go. Just keep in mind, the barrel length is measured from the bolt face to muzzle.

Just me but after having a bunch of different lengths....
11.5 or 12.5 range for rifle rounds.
I have some 8" 300 BO love them but really wish I went longer on some and min of 11.5 on 5.56

PCC do great short.

11.5 is great for all the stated reasons, but I personally feel like 12.5 is just about the perfect balance for 5.56.

An extra inch over an 11.5 (obviously) but barely less than a 14.5 in terms of velocity. Still plenty light and handy.

Any shorter and a 300blk with a 8-9inch barrel is definitely a super viable option. I've still been able to reliably hit B/C steel at 300 yards with my 8" 300 blk and a simple dot. Pretty fantastic little set up!

Additionally, 12.5” is nice as it fits 12” handguards. Seems to be more of those available than 11”.

10" / 11.5" with carbide length gas tube, either or, Luth AR stock, like the "retro look"
11.5 w /XM177 FH, Wylde Chamber works good for me. just a thought.
The MP5 is a nice HD firearm

@Chuckman TBH I can not remember if you have had a chance to rum the Sig MPX or not. If you want to give it a whirl just let me know and we will get on it.

The MPX is great but a bit heavy. How about an APC9K? Or Maxim PDW 5" in .300?

Just remember, in 5.56, in short 11.5 or less barrels, you're trading a lot of needed velocity for a lot of unneeded muzzle blast.

There’s a lot of bad dudes out there that went to meet their 72 virgins from the business end of a 10.3 MK18. 11.5 is even better. Like everything else, put the rounds where they need to go and barrel length doesn’t matter a whole lot.

Edit…and put a can on everything

so is that like a 30ft holdover if you're shooting subsonic?

8.5” .300BLK with a “K” can, Dead Air Sandman-K in my case. Total barrel length with can is just under 14”.

I must apologize, should of said this first. I wish you the best in your chemo and cancer, it does change things alot
and I for one can relate to it. My other half is going through chemo 2x plus Immunotherapy in one day and she's done
2 days later for at least a week. best thing is to see if you can try some different barrel lengths, find some -one. Then one
that best suits you and your needs.
