Have y'all built a AR15 A1? They look cool. Just looking for some pointers or were to buy find parts needed. I think the A1 had a 1:12 twist rate. Im looking for somthing faster than that. Can it be done with a 16" barrel? Like M4 A1?

No but I built a similar one... call CMP Armory in Dallas NC 704-674-2058

He may be able to build one just like that as that is a pic of some he was building earlier this year...I know a member here bought one or two of them

I kinda want to do it myself. It doesn't have to be exact. New stripped lower but old school upper with a 1:7 twist.

That BCM link is for an A2 barrel. The A1 model was a pencil barrel profile and required a .625" front sight base

M16A1 parts kits are out there, but most are missing the lower receiver and barrel. Plan on around $700 for a parts kit.

Here's a couple links for pencil barrels with tighter twist rates
1-9 twist - http://shop.ar15sport.ihoststores.com/productinfo_v3.aspx?productid=BARREL-20LWT19
1-7 twist - http://www.shop.dezarms.com/product.sc?productId=121

Nodak Spud is a good place for retro lower receivers.

RETRO BLACK RIFLE is a good resource if you're trying to build a "correct" rifle.

It doesn't have to be correct. Just close enough in the upper. Im going for the cheapest lower I can find that's not plastic. Thanks for the links.

“M4 A1” You want a carbine with rifle hand guards and a fixed stock? Dissipator seems good. Or mimicking a Colt 605 but with a forward assist.

Your not speaking my language. I don't know jack chit about ARs. Yeah a fixed stock but a 16 inch barrel.

That's easy. Your OP was kinda misleading.
Every maker out there makes 16" barrels. Any lower you build you can put a fixed stock on.
Now...if you're wanting a 16", A2 stock, "fake" retro (rifle guards), you're gonna have to go with something like a Spike's gimp or build it.

Ok so yes a colt 605 is exactly what I want.

I like your style. You went straight to the deep end of the pool.

You got like 3 options.
1. Spend a bazillion dollars and years chasing down original parts.
2. Wait for AIM Surplus to get Spike's Gimp uppers back in stock.
3. Call BCM, ask for Jim, see if they have time to make you a fake dissy. (16" pencil, push the post out to rifle and pin it.)

Back in the day, BCM would make you one. Then things blew up. Now that it's slowed down, BCM may make you the upper you want.

Whats a gimp and dissy? push the post out to rifle and pin it?

A "dissy" is a "dissipator" like the 605 pipboy posted. A 20" rifle cut back to the sight post.
Long story short (without making your head hurt) they didn't work. Sorta.
The gas port was too close to the end of the rifle.
The modern solution (to get a 'period correct' working rifle) is to use a midlength gas system, then put the front sight post at the 20" barrel position.
Then put a handguard pin in it to keep the handguards from twisting. "Push it and pin it."
A 'gimp' is Spike's Tactical 'pre-made upper' version. They don't make them often and they sell out quick. tbh, I'm not a Spike's fan. Neither here nor there, I just don't like the people.
That's the Reader's Digest dissy description. Entire web blogs have been written about "working dissys".

Seriously, just go with what @Jeremy2171 suggested and buy from CMP Armory. I did and I absolutely love my retro clone. Plus it will be $500-$600 cheaper than anything you could put together using surplus parts. Believe me, I researched the crap out of it before pulling the trigger. You really won't regret it.

Here are some pics of mine from CMP Armory.

OK guys im thinking delton dissy barrel, brownells upper or nodak spuds, us collectors ordnance for furniture. The rest should go pretty easy right? Im going spikes lower or cheapest i can find. cmp is using delton barrels he quoted me at $850 for a complete A2 rifle and $400 for an upper with BCG.
