I've posted before about my satisfaction buying targets and hangers from a particular EBay seller. I just ordered more for an upgrade. So far, he has always shipped quickly, the plates are as good as any others and the prices are usually the best around. He has nearly every possible size and shape.

At the moment, he is discounting 1/2" (although I bought 3/8") and selected other items, he's offering free shipping (a big deal on steel) AND 30% off most items if you buy two or more. So far, two or more has meant any two items (in other words, mix and match is ok). Once, I ordered a very expensive plate (maybe $150 or so IIRC), added a 2 or 3" plate (that cost $4 or $5 IIRC) and got 30% off the entire order. In other words, buying that extra plate (that I'll never hit in a million years), saved me $45 or so on the big plate.

    YMMV ;)

Here's one of the items I reordered tonight (to hang more plates). After fooling around with chain (that can be damaged and also lets the plate flop around making follow-up shots difficult), I love these hangers. With the 30% discount, they're around $12.50 a pair. Buy them (and a pipe) once and you're done.

You obviously ain't never seen my friend shoot.

I made a stand once for the wife to use as a photo booth at one of her many "functions". You know the kind where you put you head in the hole and you look like someone or something else. When she was done with it an brought it home I thought what a can I do with this now. Answer: Target holder. I added a cable at top and bottom at the right spot so I could use clothes pins to hold the targets on. My friend came over one day to try it out and guess what he did? He shot the cable in two. Just what I expected to have happen at some point. BUT NOT ON THE FIRST SHOT.

Give me your address and I will send him over. We will see how long these things hold up. ;)

I ordered this stuff around 1 this morning and they sent a FedEx tracking number at 10 this morning. Seems his free shipping is two day, at least in this case. The steel should arrive Wednesday. :)

    Thanks for the heads up!

Ordered a couple of plates for now and have a stack of conduit to build stands for them :) Might have to order some more if this is still a sale later this week.

They have something called EBay Bucks. These are normally accumulated at 1% of purchases. They’re awarded quarterly (IIRC) and then can be used for a month or so towards any purchase. I just received a message that I’m entitled to 5% Bucks for a few days (but, of course after I placed my order). If you got such an email, order in time and contemplate future EB purchases, this is a way to get another 4% “off”. For what it’s worth.

I had a bunch of steel in my cart and don’t know why I procrastinated. When I got around to ordering, both the sale discount and the 30% deal were gone. The difference between his “full price” and the mega deal on my prospective order was $80 something.

I waited a few days and he reinstated everything. Moral of the story, if you don’t see the deal, wait a day or two. ;)

booyahhh. got a 4, 8 and 14 inch plates, shipped by Thursday for 65 bucks. hoping the quality on these are good. there's definitely quality variability tolerance in AR500 and I've had really great luck with shootingTargets7 (amazon). mild dimpling blasting those damn plates with 223/556 from 25 yards and then some garbage likely Chinese sourced plate from Cabelas that has craters shot with same at 100 yards.

On the guy’s EB listings, he recommends no closer than 75 yards for rifles. Other than a 15/22, I’ve shot only handgun rounds at mine.

yeah, that's lawyer speak. My barrel being 12 inches is honestly probably safer shooting at 25 as it still has enough velocity to guarantee obliteration of the projectile....but yeah, farther better in general. If fragmentation bullets weren't so damn expensive I would use them. When shooting rifle at close distance I do wear my armor plates as well. Also with handgun when its colder. Handgun is ridiculous. I find projectiles with 95% or more of their mass left on the ground--would basically just be getting shot with a subsonic round lol.

Also of note, to date I've been using 1/2 inch plates for rifle, but just picked up 3/8 as I would like to have more consistent report across various calibers. Still should be good though as long as velocity <2800 fps.

Yeah, I saw that when I was in there other day picking up my ammo. I shooting the cheap commie stuff at </= .20$/round. Though I suppose I could pick up a few boxes for some serious up close rifle drills (like 10 yards) that would be fun as hell. Just can't afford that for normal routine where I shoot between 150-250 rounds per trip.

Just thought of something else that might be helpful for steel shooters.

My plates are hanging either from those twisted AR500 hangers (photo above) or chain. Occasionally, I manage to break or bend the 3/8” Home Depot carriage bolts. A friend searched around and pointed me to www.BoltDepot.com who sell a broad array of fasteners including Grade 5 and 8 heat treated. As I break the Home Depot bolts or hang new plates, I’m using hardened and haven’t had any failures yet. They ship really fast (ordered yesterday, will arrive Thursday), have everything you could imagine (I also use hardened nuts, flat and lock washers) and their hardened stuff doesn’t seem to cost any more than the galvanized from HD.

@Jeppo , thanks for the heads up on this one dude. I've been wanting to pick up 3/8 thickness for better report from pistol (esp 22lr)--the half inch is just a beast (still hear it most of time, but not as assertively).

My ultimate test for quality AR500 sources (because quality DEFINITELY varies and reputable sellers curate better sources) is shooting with 223 @ 25 yards using my 12" AR bbl. Velocity from barrel is just shy of 2800 fps, which is the velocity where AR500 pits. its a matter of surface/material science, NOT thickness, which is often misunderstood. Even if you shot 8 ft thick AR500 structure with 3000fps, you would pit. thickness affect warping (and at some point obviously just straight up penetration). The lower qual spec AR500 (ie. lower end of hardness tolerance) will pit a bit even with my 12 in bbl. I can confirm THESE DO NOT :)

They also ring nicely with pistol and 22lr.

My wife and I got a good laugh about the packaging. But hey, whatever keeps costs down. I was actually concerned initially that the 6 in plate was not legit. the color was significantly different and when I used an automatic center punch, it definitely created a deeper hole than with the other two. However that was clearly inadequate diagnostic on my part, as it held up flawlessly to rifle caliber rounds today just as well as the others!

Im super thrilled with these plates. So thanks again Jeppo.

regarding vids, course of fire description is in the 'did you go shooting today' thread. Yes, my range rules allow rifle caliber steel targets @ 25 yards and whenever shooting non-22r at close range I also wear body armor (though sometimes get complacent on pistol only days admittedly).

    22lr version

Glad you’re happy. As I mentioned, I’ve yet to be disappointed. It seems I ordered more hangers than he had in stock so my shipment won’t arrive until tomorrow.

I'm waiting for a sale again- I didn't see any mention of one on Ebay when I looked.

Edit: Now I see the discount- when adding to cart.

I really like the guy at Shooting Targets 7, but the steel I've gotten from him hasn't made it past the first shot before warping or pitting.

interesting. I have at least 3 plates from shootigg Nd
Interesting. Shooting Targets 7 (the amazon supplier) has been my go-to for AR500 and I've found their steel to be super high quality. the orange plate hanging in back (photo below) has been shot with thousands of rounds of 223/556. Id say 95% within 50 yards. ~75-80% at 25 yards. Its dimpled a bit, but no warping at all (.5 in plate). The orange with white circle has ~1k round of same, with more mixed range distances but not exceeding 100 yards.

What thickness and diameter plates are you using and what calibers at what distance? Big and heavy bullets cause warping with inadequate thickness (but also a function of radius). the hardness impacts dimpling and pitting, which has a velocity limit inAR500 steel of ~2800fps (that's why 223/556 normally harsher on half in plates then 308).

I got enough makeup hours to cover for my sick time, so I treated myself to their shelf style 2x4 brackets and some hangers. Figure one steel on hooks, one on chains and I can shoot cans off the 2x4 also. I want some of those little steel stand ups too.

My plan is to fill 4 2ltr bottles or flowerpot or something with concrete and stick a length of conduit in for the legs, figure that should be stable but portable enough that I can stick it in the shed and keep it away from my thieving neighbours.

I had an epiphany yesterday and thought I should apologize to any of you that I sucked into buying this AR500. I realized the only time I miss with absolute consistency is when I’m shooting at this guy’s plates.

They’re obviously defective. Sorry guys!!!!! :(

I noticed @Sas quatch just “liked” this old post so I should update it.

Since switching to hardened bolts, I’m breaking a lot more than when I used the “normal” HD galvanized kind. I suppose hardening makes them more brittle and I pretty much have to replace at least one per shooting session (assuming I actually hit a plate). They always shatter and break off clean compared with the old ones that would bend and/or break.

There’s an upside to having them shatter. When the old ones broke, it was a struggle to remove the damaged bolt and nuts. With the hardened bolts, everything comes apart easily. I feel like I’m replacing a lot more bolts but saving time and aggravation when doing so.

    YMMV
