I read this at Eham. Something I went through a while back a little myself. If we try to be aloof and rude, we will see radio die. Kids are hard enough to get interested in anything constructive without turds running them down. Us older guys simply don't appreciate attitude either. Admittedly, it was very few and far between as it related to me, but I hear it about every time I am on HF for any length of time. Guys stomping "LIDS" and telling people how bad they suck instead of helping them to be better. Those who have been in radio for many years, are you an elitist a$$ or are you keeping new people interested? Food for thought.

Read this with a clear mind or dont read it:
I've been licensed since the 1990s,have been interested in electronics all my life, became a technician and got a job
doing electronics out of school. For years I have been toting around a Handie talkie. My first one was a Kenwood Th-21AT
the 2 meter Kenwood with the thumbwheel. In the beginning I didn't do much talking and tried to listen and learn when to
talk, when not to,when to ID my station and so on.Back in the 90s the excuse was "we don't like them no code techs".
Feeling unwelcome on 2 meters and having people look my old callsign up in an outdated book the ARRL used to put out
kept me from talking,so I just used to listen. My friend and I used to chat on simplex late at night and have fun just
talking about life and such. His neighbor about 5 blocks down used to come on and scold us for splashing him and we were
only doing 5 watts in 1 town. Ok so he was a grouch.I couldnt fix that and neither could my friend.
After getting out of school him and I got back on the air and started to hang again on repeaters and simplex.
No problems really.Just the good old boys network every once and awhile giving us "you didn't ID or this or that" or stupid no coders talk.Yes I don't claim to know it all,I do have a right to get on the air with an FCC license.
The problem with this mentality is if you chase everyone away, they will take over the bands and sell them off to the
highest bidder. You get it yet?If not start at the top and reread this post.
I have been seeing more and more people that if they don't like what you say they complain (i wanted to say the B word)
tell you to go back to CB,leave a repeater, you get on simplex its the same "good old boys network".
Well guys out there in radioland.....Newsflash the Good old boys network is dying off and the radio is becoming more and more
dead by the day.Meaning less QSOs,more digital noise and more complainers. Here's a thought,if you dont like what you hear
on a certain frequency, turn the knob to another. But dont start complaining all over to another person. Some people actually like the hobby and want it to grow and become bigger and not DIE.Instead of being a chowderhead, why dont you try welcoming
someone to the hobby or try and talk to people.Get on the bands, use em or you will lose them!
And to all you like to cause intentional interference, the FCC is stepping up their game, increasing fees for this kind of thing.
So if you think this is stupid or don't respect a ham or someone who doesn't have a bigger license or a smaller one than you, then honestly you don't like the hobby, sell your radio and buy skis or something.

Signed a concerned citizen of the ham radio community.

One conversation I heard had about 5 men running one guy down and saying "we can't help that you only have 100W and can't keep up", "why don't you get off this band and get back on the repeater". The guy sounded like he just wanted to leave the hobby when he finally just stopped talking and either moved on or shut his radio off. I guess that there are a$$%^&*s in every facet of life.

Hey! I like my skis. Don't send those jackholes my way! :p. Just kidding, I appreciate the sentiment. Being an elitist makes some people feel strong and better than others. But I believe they have never had someone learn under them and grow in an interest. Teaching and sharing is where it really is at.

Yes there certainly are and there are also those who turn everything into a pissing contest who are also no fun to deal with.

This guy gets it...

However elmering can be a slippy slope. I prefer elmering from my own experiences. Not the experience or opinions of someone else.

Well ... applying it to firearms and shooting I'll say there are a lot of people who know more than me, shoot way better and have nicer equipment as well as there being other on the opposite side of the scale. Really it doesn't matter to me which side they fall when interacting as long as they are SAFE, courteous of others and have a little fun when the situation in appropriate. There are certain gun clubs and ranges I have visited and while I didn't feel out of place there were comments heard about others like above posts have stated. I don't care if a person is shooting skeet with a pump instead of a $2k O/U ... I don't care if a person is shooting a Hi Point carbine instead of a Sig MPX ... or so on as long as they do it safely, courteous to those around them and respect the property they are shooting on.

Back to the radio side, IIMHO.... That's what turns off a lot of newbys is the hi tech talk while trying to show us how much you know instead of boiling it down into terms the beginner can understand. All I have tried in the past was to listen and even that was a royal failure. F' it, I stopped trying and threw the damned thing in a drawer and moved on with life. The last thing I need in my life right is more frustration..... No thanks...

I can be either. I prefer to be the welcomer, however when I run across that ham (newbie or old fart) that is giving horrible, and inaccurate elmering, I will chime in. I leave it up to the person giving the inaccurate advice to set the tone of the discussion going forward. We can go the a$$ route if that's what they prefer. Subjects that I have little to no knowledge of, I remain silent. I listen and learn. On subjects that I have many years of on hands experience with, and can back-up with facts, I'll speak up. That's what elmering is. That's the way it's always been, and how it should remain. If that person giving horrible elmering can't handle being challenged when they provide bad info, well this hobby may not be for them for them.

EDIT: Also if I give advice that is shown to be in error, I'll correct it. I will not attempt to defend it.

And I'd NEVER ask others to ignore the post of any users in this forum. If anyone here desires to ignore (hide) my post, be my guest. However if someone request you ignore another user, I highly suggest you question their motive..
