Army Nat Guard SF in Niger

That’s the kind of stuff we supported in PSYOP. Before anyone laughs about the NG angle, realize NG SF are NOT your typical Guard unit. Those dudes spend a bunch of time down range. Many are prior active duty SF & some even former Delta bubbas.

Hell, no. I remember after 9/11 when they called several NG teams to AD, they were given crappy assignments. When they finally deployed they were given crappy missions. Then many of them went rogue and started hunting their own missions and having better outcomes than the AD guys. That left a lot of egg on the commander's face in Afghanistan and a lot of the relationships changed after that, for the better.

I did some training here at Duke for some 18Ds from B/3/20 at Roanoke Rapids....there were a couple MDs, a couple PAs, some RNs, a resp therapist, a cop, a FF...some had been active duty, some went straight guard, but all were locked on.

I was kind of surprised at first, because of the stereotypes. But each and every NG SF, minus some 18x NG, that I have worked with have all been top notch, stand out students.

A little bit older and lots of life and military experience seems to be the rule rather than the exception in the rookie environment that I get to play with them in.

Oh yeah, first time I heard of a NG SF unit all the NG stereotypes ran through my head. Got to know a bunch of ‘em real well, working in the SOCEUR J3 shop & they were all GTG & cool as hell.

One CWO5 looked for all the world like a pipe smoking professor that liked his groceries. Dunno what he did in the world, but worked in “Special Activities” and had been a member of a couple SMUs back in the day.
