Curious what the opinion of these is... been debating one for my first AK. Dont have room in my life for another caliber (x39), so the 5.56 is appealing..

Mags look spendy and a potential PITA to find..but Im just getting done buying 70 dolla HK93 mags..so thatd just be a shift to aoither gun...

Am I crazy? Are these as cool as they look? Accuracy reasonable ? Should I seek something else?
 
I have one and some Chicoms 84s too. 106 does fine but I really like the norincos better, just More style but they cost 50% more usually too...and their mags are even worse ($$$).
 
I had one. Just didn’t love it for some reason. The mag angle just weird on an AK to me. Mine did run fine though. I think I had one malfunction and I think it was the ammo. Mag choice is definitely limited though.

I enjoy 7.62x39 and 5.45 much more.

I have it now :) I like it. A lot. Only downside is, as you mentioned, mags. Circle 10s work great but are spendy. Some folks hate the Gen-1 smokes and only use blacks, but the smokes have been 100% for me so far and I'd have no problem buying more of them. Polish Beryl mags also work great, are half the cost, but are sometimes harder to find (although AOA currently has them in stock).

The 106 rifle is well balanced, accurate, and reliable. Fit and finish are top notch. Recoil is negligible. And in my opinion, yes, it is as cool to shoot as it looks. Mine has worked its way into my range rotation about 90% of the time. If you are on the fence and either A) don't need to be a mag whore, or B) can afford to be, then I'd say come on over to my side and get yourself one. They are great AKs and really outshine some of my 7.62x39 guns.
 
Some of the early one's had problems.
I had one a while back with the smoke mags that I shot the snot out of without issues from the rifle. However, two of the five mags I had developed cracks. YMMV.

I'm with @WadeWatts on this. I just can't get excited about them. It feels like you're driving on the wrong side of the road.

I heard you can modify the follower on surplus 5.45 mags to run 5.56, but I can’t confirm if that would work. But now surplus 5.45 mags cost the same or more than new (10) 5.56 mags. Would be cool if you could use Magpul 5.45 mags at $11 a pop. Seems like the 106 supply isn’t slowing down, so maybe Magpul will think about making 5.56 AK mags in the future.

There used to be special made followers made by Robeson arms for this conversion, but they are unobtanium now...
 
Century also fugged with some DDR 5.45 bakelites way back in the day when they were importing WASR/SAR-3 rifles. From what I remember reading it was the mags' fault - well, Century's to be more accurate - that those guns got such a bad reputation.
 
IMO, if you have the money to get a 106 and invest in the mags/ammo, just get a 74 variant and shoot the caliber it was designed for.

5.45x39 is the shit. Wish I had one.

Well, the better half pressured me into buying one when I saw classic had 1 left.. so ordered it up. Just have mags to try to hunt down..ordered up a few 20rd bulgy and 30rd promag (figured 10bucks a pop itd be worth a shot). Cant find the 30rd bulgy or radom polish ones but keeping an eye out.
 
To late now but if you must shoot 556 out of a AK,, the Zastava M90np is the best thing out there. Mags are dirt cheap and plentiful.

You actually bought my last x39 (sks) amd ammo..like 2 years ago. Lol. ;)

Interesting..

Been lucky and scored a few bulgarian 30s and polish 30s for decent prices..will have to try that on a cheap 545 mwg.

He briefly explains it in the comments. Remove the parts and scrape off the two molded rails inside the mag body with a chisel.

I have a bunch of Magpul 5.45 mags and plan to get to the range next week, so I'll try this out and report back.
 
Well, the weather is shite so no range time for me today. I grabbed a 5.45 PMAG and went back to rewatch that Instagram video but it's been removed. @WadeWatts do you happen to know the uploader's IG name, or if he reposted it?

Saweet. They had em friday for 3 hrs..snagged some then. Really need to hold off on more..bought a lot if em lately..bukgy and polish beryl.

Just wanted to update this thread and say I finally got to try out my modded 5.45 PMAG today. Dremeled and filed out the internal rails based on the IGer's since-removed video, and ran a couple mags of Wolf Gold and Monarch through my 106 today - no problems at all. I only loaded 20 rounds at a time but was happily surprised.

Niice! I ended up putting plum fore end furniture on, a circle 10 triangle folder, and did a paracord wrap (plum colored as well).
Dumped 50rd or so this mornin, banging steel at a hundo w/ease.

With all these holiday sales kinda debating a red dot to throw on.
