A Martin County man thought he heard someone outside his bedroom door in the middle of the night Wednesday.
Thinking it was an intruder, the man shot at them. But it wasn’t an intruder. It was his pregnant wife, reports say.

Read that this morning. His stated he shot at the shape in the dark. Lights are important.

Stupidity. I recall another story over 20 years ago, family comes home and hears noise in the bedroom closet, the door opens and the dad fires the shotgun and ends up killing one of his daughters who came home for the weekend.

This is one of the tenets of the Four Rules:

"Be sure of your target and what lies beyond it."

Shooting at shadows is exceedingly stupid.

Wife is always complaining that at night i leave a single high efficiency light on in the hallway or the room opposite the bedroom. This is why.
Now let's talk about her turning on 11 40watt halogens to make a piece of toast...

My grandad almost shot my dad on the steps of the house when my dad came back on leave unexpectedly during WW2. It was during the night and my dad was trying to be quiet and not wake up the house. My grandfather was this close to putting a .32 from an Iver Johnson revolver into him. See your target, identify your target, assess the threat.

The over the stove light stays on in the kitchen. It gave enough ambient light for most of the house. But, it also put the bedrooms in the dark end of the hallway and difficult to see into from the lit kitchen. For bumps at 0'dark 30. I had a whole house protocol when I lived in the city.

I recall two similar cases over the last 3 decades. IIRC one case was an attorney who had a similar story. The other was an airline pilot who said he thought his wife, wearing a night gown was an intruder when he shot and killed her.

I don't recall the outcomes. I seem to remember the attorney not being indicted. I don't recall exactly what happened to the pilot. I think a jury found him not guilty. But that often happens when dealing with 12 people too stupid to get out of jury duty.

Anyways, I do recall that the concensus was they were both full of it and killed their wives. I'll wait to see what the investigation reveals on this one. Regards 18DAI

I also find this one a hard one to believe. I know if I heard something that would cause me to get my gun the first thing I would do is reach over for my wife and make sure she is there before I took any action. I'd want to know she's safe and for her to know what I'm doing so she also doesn't get her gun. We have no kids home they are grown and gone and live to far away to just pop in and they don't have a key to our house. This one has that smell about it.

He did. Only he says he mistook the dog for his wife. That should tell you something, right there.
